This community-site does not work very good on an iPad

There’s an irony here. No disrepect to you though fella!

Of all of the forums I use, this is the most weird in terms of format, display and usability.

-It would be nice to have a “Select shows processing” setting. Anytime a channel is selected, the touch screen would automatically pull up it’s processing page. As of now, it’s a two step process (Select, then Processing button) but this would obviously be the most used page when selecting a channel.

I agree, having to press two buttons is a bit annoying to process a channel.

When using the Shutdown command, all faders should rise to the top for transportation and storage. It’s good practice to keep all faders at the top point as they’re furthest away from the edge of the console where they’re most likely to get bumped/bent during movement to/from a flight case.

Another good idea so I have created a scene called “Shutdown” where it moves all of the faders to 0db for this purpose. But again, this is now a two step process where it should only need to be one.

Oh well – that didn’t work too well.

Well over the wekend I tried a Sandisk Cruzer Fit 32GB (the forerunner to the Ultrafit) and it worked fine. Admittedly I only recorded 2 channels but it writes 18 anyway in multitrack. I had extimated that 48kHz sampling for 18 tracks would write about 3.3MB/sec and it worked out at 2.5MB/sec. This was based on two test recordings one of 60 seconds and another of 120 seconds. I think the Cruzer Fit is only rated at about 4-5MB/s write speed anyway. So based on that, I would say that most current drives would perform OK. So there are several low profile drives I would be prepared to try:-

    </TABLE>

The read and write speed are in MB/sec.

My motive is not the price, but the convenience of having a low profile USB device that will be used mainly for backups of scenes etc, sound checks. If I am going to make serious recordings, I would do that via USB streaming straight into a Cubase project.

Check out the last post on this link – Sandisk have effectively acknowledged there is a problem!

And here are some other unflattering reviews

I bought one of those thinking because of its low profile it would sit nicely and not get knocked. I got no joy at all, same problem as you. It also ran very hot.

I rsorted to the Sandisk Extreme and that works fine. I have a Sandisk Cruzer that I might try as that is another low profile device, but I expect that won’t have the I/O performance that is needed.

As the AR2412 just talks via standard ethernet, is it possible to update the firmware by connecting to a PC/Mac? If so, I guess a crossover ethernet cable might be needed if not going via a hub/router. Does the mixer act as a DHCP server? If not I guess you would have to connect via a DHCP enableded hub/router using standard straight through ethernet cables. I’ve had a route around the GLD/QU support areas for firmware updates to the AR2412 and I can’t find any.

I use one of those with my QU 24, so the answer would be yes :o)

This latency thing is a real red-herring. Yeah I could do sound processing on an Apple device but why would I? It would be like crossing the Atlantic in a rowing boat. Yes it can be done, buy why when I could catch a liner or fly?

I agree with timhum. Never apply a firmaware update just before a gig without first having tested what the update will do. I had a gig on Friday and although 1.6 had just been released, I resisted applying it for fear of having a broken mixer.

I bought a SanDisk UltraFit 32GB and it did not work with the QU 24 at all. A shame really as the very small profile would be ideal as it wouldn’t risk getting knocked about like the tall Extreme, in fact it could have been left in place even when putting the mixer away.

Not tried streaming from the QU 24 yet, but with my previous mixer I was able to record 16 channels and do overdubs with imperceptible latency issues on a core 2 duo laptop with 8GB RAM and 240GB SSD running Cubase 7 on Windows 7 64 bit. I reduced the buffer size within Cubase and also made sure there were very few background processes. I also turn off AV and firewall and disconnect from the net whilst recording.

I built an i3 desktop with 16GB RAM (also running Cubase 7 on Windows 7 64 bit) and an SSD and got terrible stuttering etc. Turned out to be the video driver. Once I had that sorted everything was hunky dory.

32 bit is not a good idea, your DAW will be restricted to 2GB of RAM even if you have 4GB installed. That is the limitation of 32 bit Windows.
