There’s a few flavors of this thread in here now. Might be useful to consolidate into a “using the SQ-6 in the studio and for recording” thread.

Gosh – I haven’t heard of an “Abend” since my IBM days back in the 80s and 90s.

No kidding! He could have at least given us a core dump.

Yea, I see that now, too. So it would only be the power cord routing to the front of the unit. Might be manageable.

… and today, the DX012 was just announced. Might be a very good answer. Need pricing!

(Frustratingly, why are all the ports on the front? Ugh.)

Thank you for the feedback. The price of the DX32 is almost that of an SQ-5! So, yes, a very expensive option for adding an AES output.

The Dante card isn’t cheap either, but probably a better long term option for my workflow. If the SQ-6 had a software “control room/monitor” concept, I’d probably go this way, but for now I have to use an external monitor controller to solve for my needs there.

    Maybe in time.

So let me add to this list, with some priorities based on how much I believe they will appeal to addressable market.

    1. Studio/Control Room master section. Basic volume control for multiple monitors, use existing output channels and dedicate them to the purpose. Allow assigning of soft knobs for tasks, and perhaps even use one of the layers for smaller boards like the SQ-5.

    2. Robust DAW integration. Something truly functional, along the lines of the Avid Artist, Pro Control, Mackie, etc. type solutions with really elegant use of fader banks, scribble strips, built-in EQ and Comp, as well as possible plug-in management. Supporting fader automation and mute writes and reads is essential.

    3. On-line editor. This is something akin to a combination of the Off-Line editor, SQ-MixPad and perhaps SQ4You at the same time, all rolled into a nice PC/Mac program. Something like what Aardvark supplies with the Orion 32 product (but, uh, so *not* like that thing, please!).

    4. An SQ plugin. Longer term thing, but something that let’s me use SQ processing from the DAW as a channel insert easily. It would make the Deep plugins a much more appealing purchase.

I like my SQ-6, so I say this with some “tough love”.

The desk is useless as a DAW controller. Missing the concept of bank shift, dynamic scribble strips, high-res (not 127 steps!) fader position, etc.

It could be really good. A layer could be dedicated to DAW control and provide features akin to something like a combination of an MC Control, MC Mix and MC Transport. I moved off that equipment when I got my SQ-6 and downsized my project room.

From a DAW control perspective, the SQ-6 is a huge miss, especially compared to something like the Euphonix stuff. So, I’m back to the keyboard and mouse for now.

A software “master section” would be a huge perk. Monitor control, basic control room features.

I agree the SQ-Series is a great desk for a project room, and isn’t far from being quite perfect in the role.

For me, the two “glaring” omissions are:

    1. A software master section

    2. The lack of robust/elegant DAW control (something akin to EuCon or other competitively rich/functional protocol, please!)

I’d like this. It’s useful when setting up post-fade sends to exactly 0dB for example, and it doesn’t have to take up any space if it only shows the fader level as it’s being moved, as on GLD.

I made a flavor of this request for exactly this reason. My request was to be able to program a soft key to set the current track selection to 0 for USB returns.

Would this concept work for you?

    Studio monitor Management

I would like to see a software “master section” on the desk as well. I’m using a TC-Electronic BMC-2 for monitor management, but I would love to remove that device from the workflow and use only the SQ-6 instead.

Are there any plans from A&H to possibly release the SQ plug-ins, DEEP plugins… in DAW compatible format?

This is a very interesting idea. I know that personally I won’t consider the DEEP plug-in upgrades for the desk exactly because I feel like plugins for VST are a much better value: more broadly usable, generally cheaper, and so on.

But, a DEEP plugin that I liked I could use in the desk or in the box… now that could be interesting.

The real issue is probably the DSP — I suspect DEEP plug-ins are written specifically for a give chipset and don’t port as easily as one would like.

This could be implemented entirely as soft functions, in my opinion.

Those that wanted monitor control would dedicate some soft keys and knobs to the functions of switch monitors (probably a key to iterate through previously defined set ups) and of course control room level. Physical outputs would be designated as monitor outs, and it’s essentially just some very lightweight channel functionality on a summing bus just past whatever hit Mix-L/R.

Take a look at how Nuendo/Cubase does this and I think you would see some very good ideas for this functionality.

There’s something special about what Nuendo is doing.

On a hunch, I started Nuendo, put it in the background, and went and used Windows media. No dropouts. Close Nuendo, and dropouts will begin again periodically.

In my case, ASIO is perfect, regular Windows is not.
