Something that happened to me a couple of months ago – I had the linked fader poltergeist move my faders at a show half a dozen times.
It didn’t happen again but then a couple of weeks later I had a different weird fader level thing occur.
I was mixing FOH on my iPad and the guys started making weird faces and gesturing. I managed to work out they were saying they could hear too much reverb. I made adjustments but I got odd looks all night long. I found out from them that the reverb would suddenly become huge and then go back to normal. This happened randomly throughout the night.
I then had someone point out that there was a bug fix on v1.73 for the linked fader problem so I download the new firmware. Neither of those issues have happened since.

My point is that maybe it wasn’t just the linked faders that had the gremlins.…???

One more vote for the Apple Airport Express. My friend Mr. Dick Rees first put the bug in my ear last year but I was using a ‘mostly’ reliable Cisco. I still would get dropout though once in a while. I finally switched to the Apple 2-3 months ago and it was the best thing I did for my wi-fi set up.The range is much better and I have experienced drop out one time only due to poor positioning on my part. This is definitely a Buy once – cry once decision.

I have to say I kinda agree about the build quality – I own Yamaha products and am very partial but I too ‘played around’ with a TF5 in GC the other day and the faders didn’t feel very high quality compered to my QU16, they didnt feel as smooth or have as much resistance. I couldnt spend much time on it so didnt get to hear it either.

You may have the gains too low. Due to the acoustic sound of the drums, you are perhaps keeping the gain levels low through the PA and not noticing it. Turn the gains up to where they should be so the metering is up to around zero and then turn the channel faders down to adjust to taste through the PA. That way the recording level will be higher on the drum channel tracks.

Thanks Bruce – we use the stereo mixes for iems also but I use one extra mono mix for the 4th iem, and 2 mono mixes for specialized FX- so I do have one mono mix free. I’ll try this and see if it helps…thank again!!

On a side note – I love my QU16 and at this price point, it has ridiculous functionality so no complaints here – However….. I think limiting the board to 3 stereo mixes doesn’t make much sense. Id like to be able to link the mono mixes for stereo. I wonder if this will ever become available with firmware????

Interesting Bruce – this sounds like a good solution. How would I go about setting up a mix to be a pre fader send to a reverb and then route that to a stereo mix ?

Thanks Bob….that is what I was expecting, I suppose – at least I wasn’t missing something

I never put FX through wedges but I do find that bands I work with who use iems prefer a little reverb – no echo!!. I was a singer for many years – very confident in my vocal ability – and although I never put reverb through my wedge monitor, I must admit I would prefer a small amount through iems if I had used them. Personal preference.
I do use a stage mic for ambience also to help a little with the iems.

So it seems I was expecting too much from the mixer – which is what I thought – and I need to rethink if I want to get separate control of FX between FOH and mon outs….

    Thanks everyone for your suggestions…

There is no way to get any more than 3 stereo mixes from that board. I find some musicians insist on stereo and some do not mind as much. Be choosy and give the 3 to those who simply cannot go without stereo and the 2 mono mixes to those who are not so fussy….

I think folks realized that you had asked if anyone local to you could help you learn, but the comments here, with the limited information you gave were attempts to help you out meanwhile – assuming you might not find anyone to help you right a way – if at all. My comment assumed you needed help becoming familiar with using the processing as you had said you had ‘very basic skills as a sound engineer’ but I also suggested setting up everything the way you do live when you have plenty of time and spend some time with the system in a live setting as ‘practice makes perfect’. It is easier to tame feedback as and when it occurs and to take note of what you did to stop it so the live setting could still be of benefit to you whilst you gain knowledge from others and what you might read. Guidance and education are essential but spending the time to try different things would benefit you.

Can’t help you from the U.S.- sorry but Could you get a few recorded tracks down and spend a day just playing with each channel – EQ, comp, gate, FX etc. ? That would help you so much because sometimes it’s just a case of becoming familiar with each aspect of the system. Then have the band set up and play and spend some time doing the same thing concentrating on monitors and drum mic placement. Do this when you have time and you are not rushed at a gig.

This all sounds very positive. When a new QU firmware is announced I always wait till I hear 3 or 4 positive reviews before I take the plunge. So far so good.

Just after I got my QU16 18 months ago, I had a problem with one particular scene. I could not get FX to work at all. I tried everything, reset, shift scene to another slot but I still could not get FX on that one scene regardless of position. I had another QU16 user help me by phone who had more experience than me and had owned his longer but he was stumped too.
I copied all the settings I had for that scene and set up a new scene. FX worked fine and have done so ever since for every setup I have used. I actually saved the scene and called it ‘bad scene’ just in case a firmware update down the road would correct it or I ever found the solution. I have gone back to it a couple of times to mess with it as I got more experience with the mixer but it still does not pass FX.
I think sometimes these things just happen….
