    Yeh- thanks Dave..
This was the first time ever that I did not reformat my USB2.0 harddrive before recording a show over QU/SQ Drive.
    Perhaps that was the issue.
Real shame that I lost the lead vocals of Friday’s show 🙁

And now I don’t trust that configuration.

One thing you can do with QU that you can’t with SQ is stream to USB B port and the QUDrive at the same time.. that redundancy gave me confidence when it was a critical recording

And now I’m not quite sure what to do because I do get asked to record shows a lot– it’s something you want to be able to just set and forget 🙁

I am trying the USB streaming to my laptop again but it’s not USB 2.0 it’s USB C so I am trying a USB3 to USB C external hub and a fast SSD USB C external drive on my Macbook Pro with Reaper. It seemed to drop out a bit at 96kHz but maybe at 48Khz it will be better.. I’m doing a long “soak” test and will see.

Moving away from the USB option to Dante or similar is heinously expensive 🙁

well.. turned out the files were on the memory stick in the AH file structure and when I copied them to another stick and loaded from that I got my scenes back (well it said some were not restored but most were it seems)..
So an issue reading that USB stick I think…

    Lessons learned..
    Use shows..
Make backups of your memory sticks

Still think the UX is weird around this area though

    Thanks Hugh,
Yeh- I’m totally happy with all my A&H purchases over the years– not saying there is any issue at all.. not at all.. I don’t have redundancy concerns exactly – just wondered how people look at this with the SQ range.. I suspect that another SQ5 would be the go but I prob won’t as its prob not justifiable for me..

    Thanks Mark

How do I shift 1/2 wavelength..

When you say “This will quickly show up any points in your test where anything dropped out briefly over all channels” what should I be doing?

    Thank you

I would be interested in your experiences doing this.
I tried this on a recent recording but found that the main limitation is that of course you are mixing in real time and that it becomes hard to reproduce mix moves you make .. though I guess you can punch in record in the DAW. I tried finding ways to automate the mixer fader moves with MIDI and you can (well at least on the SQ you can) but it all became a bit complex and I have UAD plugins.

But how did you get on?
Are there significant advantages of working this way “Out of the Box” or it is just to use the mixer’s effects engine rather than plugins?
    Thanks

Thanks for correcting my misunderstanding about the UAD card

Re the Dante PCIe card … I could use Dante Virtual sound card with a pc that has a gigabit Ethernet port however that would be much lower RTL than if that pc had the PCIe Dante card installed? Is that right but unworkably slow for an effect on a guitar or voice say?

Thank you for your comments and experience.

Looks like a very cool solution– not really cheap but seems you can have any one of {fast, cheap}.
Seems to get into this I would need:
    – SQ 5 (have);
    – Ethernet hub (have);
    – Dante card for SQ;
    – PCIe Dante card
    – Newer Laptop (and Thunderbolt 3 or USB-C enclosure if using PC or Mac without PCIe) or desktop with PCIe (Mac pro most likely)
    – LiveProfessor
    – Plug ins running on the box or via low latency hardware acceleration such as UAD Apolo or Waves

    Umm 🙁

    Thanks for this observation Hugh.
Is this just a gain staging change or are you saying that the DX preamps / converters have a lower noise floor or better freq response or some other characteristic that makes them preferable?

    Yeh fair enough.. true..
I guess I meant does it have a significantly different flavour?

    Hi Mark,
Thanks very much for your reply. Your comment made me think about file size.
It got me thinking — the recording was 2.5hrs long and I have just realised would have made the laptop I was using become very low on disk space.. I’m going to assume it was that for now and do some more testing..

I had not seen any issues before this time.

So I made a recording last night of a gig I was doing.
3 bands- I just started and left the DAW recorder (Reaper) running while I focused on the mixing.
I was using a mac Pro mid 2014 with my SQ5. (USB 3).
The mixer ran smoothly and on playback of the recording the first couple of bands are fine but then well into the recording I see massive spikes of “white noise” erupt on many channels simultaneously. I also see Reaper making New takes.
I had not seen this before on my laptop but I have only made a few test recodings and 1 shorter (1hr) recording previously.

I guess that this the USB 3 problem.
What if I use an older USB 2 machine? Would I get the same channel count?

Or if I record with a SQDrive (assuming the drive is compatible) it sounds (reading this thread) that I won’t see this problem?

    Disappointing ..

I bought the 16T — I like it on live acoustic guitar.
When you say “be aware of the change of time constants..” what does this mean in practice?
    Thank you

    Thank you Steffen
Looks like what I was wondering about is possible.. will have a crack at setting it up. Thank you
(I really love my SQ.. it’s such a great piece of kit)

Happy new year btw.. hope all is good for you in these difficult times wherever you are
