The OP wants to reduce level between 20 Hz and 35 Hz.

Close, but not exactly. I wanted to cut everything below 35Hz, with a steep 4th order (24dB/octave) Linkwitz Riley slope.

Are you saying that there is content below 20 Hz that is not being filtered out?

Yes, many movies have extremely low (useless) frequencies < 10Hz, that instantly put my amp into protect-mode. The driver’s resistance goes below 2Ω with these subsonic frequencies, triggering the amp’s protection circuit. I use my mixer for everything, including my “home theater”, so I can get my money’s worth from it.

The OP didn’t want to reduce level between 20 and 35Hz, he needs to cut everything below 35Hz (which totally makes sense since this region isn’t recognizable by our ears and simply eat power from the Amp and force sub speakers to extraordinary movement, except you have subsonic-able speakers, then you can feel this inside your body…).

Thank you! I see all kinds of people on the home-theater forums chasing the < 20Hz dragon, and it seem so futile. They give up so much efficiency, and claim it makes all the difference for their listening pleasure. I won’t even mention my 35Hz x-over point on those forums, because they wouldn’t even begin to understand. They have huge threads with waveform pictures touting the merits of movies that go as low as 5Hz – I put an alien movie from their list on my video-monitor and instantly regretted it. My woofers surpassed their physical limits and my amp went into protect-mode, within the first minute of that movie.

I got a DriveRack PA+ for $219 delivered, on closeout, because they’re discontinued, which was the pièce de résistance of my rig, in effect. 99% of its functions are already covered by the Qu-16, but I really needed that 1%, so I bought the thing. The newer, replacement, the DriveRack PA-2, adds wireless iPad control, so people can ring-out their monitors from the stage and so forth, but I can already do all that with the Qu-16, so I didn’t need any of the cool new features, and saved a grip on the deal. I’m basically just using it as a crossover with subsonic filtering at this point, but I still like it.

    @Ratchet
Put the built in Comp/Limiter on your Aux fed subs.
Set it up so its just kissing the threshold to protect your speakers.
The last thing you need/want is over-driven bottom end subs in this madly driven sub bottom-end world.

Clipping the amp wasn’t what I was wanting to protect my subs against. Overexcursion from subsonic frequencies was my main concern, since some sources have < 10Hz information, but even 25Hz isn’t good for my particular drivers in their 55Hz Fb ported enclosure. The free-air phenomenon when fed lower frequencies than the port’s tuning, can cause physical damage from over excursions.

I’m already using limiters to avoid clipping amps, but I’ve since acquired a DriveRack PA+ and its subsonic filtering is covering my bottom-end now, nicely. The input channels’ HPF was working temporarily, until the DRPA+ arrived, but it didn’t help with Pink Noise, for instance.

Just seems like I bought a piece of gear that the Qu-16 already does 99% of, but had to splurge because of that 1% the Qu-16 won’t give me.

Thanks for the suggestions. I decided to overcompensate and just ordered a DriveRack PA+, because they’ve been discontinued and they were blowing them out for $219. I might just go ahead and run my subs off the L/R main mix now as well, just to get more use out of this thing. I also realized my Furman could be mounted on the rear rails of my rack, since I don’t touch it once it’s on, so it should work out okay. It just felt weird buying some digital piece of gear when I have such a capable mixer, that already does many of the things the DBX DRPA+ does (redundancy) – and to go through extra DAC. I’m hoping it won’t hurt my sound quality too much.

Because there isn’t one. There is a shelving shape to cut some, that wouldn’t work as well though. It looks to be about 6dB per octave and really digs into the surrounding frequencies too much. Thanks for the suggestion though.

to play back from the Mac to ST1 you need to route audio to Qu-16 streaming ch 17&18. This is because the first 16 streaming channels go to the Mono Inputs. Most DAWs allow this, but if you are using iTunes or similar, you need to set this as a preference in OS X. Go to Utilities / Audio MIDI Setup / Audio Devices, select the Qu-16 and click on Configure Speakers, then assign stereo Left and Right to ch 17&18.

Hi, this helped a lot, thank you. My iTunes on my Macbook comes through on my ST1 now, which is great using the Qu-16 as a soundcard. I’m having trouble with GarageBand though – it just won’t stream it’s output to my Qu-16. When I change the audio output in GarageBand to “Built-In Speakers”, it plays the audio just fine. When I change it back to “Qu-16” it won’t send me anything.

I made sure the correct USB (B) is selected for my ST-1, but since it’s receiving iTunes, it seems to be configured correctly. It’s just that GarageBand’s output won’t work. Does anyone have advice that I could try? I must be missing something simple, but cannot figure it out. I’ve quit and restarted GarageBand and it didn’t help.

Firstly, I want to say THANK YOU! I really did not want to buy another Apple product, and my Galaxy Note Edge phone has a large enough display to make an iPad (mini) a redundant hassle to keep charged and carry around. I got the para-EQ and faders to work, but couldn’t get the compressor to do anything at this point – I probably just need to keep playing with it. It does seem to disconnect every few minutes, but maybe I’m not doing something correctly. I’ll need to read the manual more slowly this second time around to really absorb its nuances. I’m in awe. Beautiful app!

What does the paid version add? I plan on purchasing it, just because I’m so grateful, but was wondering what it would gain. Regards.

So does this app replace the Apple version? I don’t want to go out and buy an iPad, if I don’t have to.

I just downloaded it, about to give it a go, but does it have TalkBack ability to wirelessly talk to the stage via the Android phone’s internal mic?

For what it’s worth, I put plastic washers between the SKB A/V shelf and the Qu’s rack-ears, so as not to scratch it. I had to double up on the washers for the overhanging 1U space above the mixer, but it’s perfectly leveled. I was going to bolt a mic flange-mount to the shelf, to attach a gooseneck for talkback, but then the lid won’t close over the extended height of the flange-mount, so I’ll have to get some sort of quick-release clamping mount instead.

Operation of this shelf should get in the way of both a gooseneck podium mic and the Allen & Heath proprietary LED light, directly connected to the back of the console, unfortunately.

I know I’m asking what seems obvious, but does this talkback channel supply phantom power for using condenser podium mics? Just want to be sure, but it seems so.

Touching the “curve” does nothing for me. I’m assuming they mean to touch on the touch-screen, but my colored shading is not coming back :/

Nevermind again. It’s under Set-Up, then Control, then touch PEQ Graph Fill. I should probably stop posting until I spend more time with this thing.

I wish I didn’t load these tutorials and reset all my settings. Is there a way to do a factory reset back to defaults, because the colored shading on my para-EQ disappeared, and I really miss it.

Does anyone know how to get my colored shading back? (I know, read the manual, right?)

Nevermind, I found it: “Touch the curve to turn the colour fill option on or off.” Sorry to bother the thread with my noobie drama.

The 1208 GigRig works beautifully. I’m loving this mixing console to death. It’s the best thing that’s ever happened to my lifelong acquisition of gear.

Thanks for your help. I ordered the SKB GigRig with 12u up top, so I hope it works out.

I realize the iPod Touch 5th gen is small, but I think its capabilities are the same as the iPads – would it work?

I already have the touch, so trying to see if it’ll get me by until I get an iPad, thanks.
