Awesome work and thanks for documenting. I’m not that great with electronics so how did you determine the fuses were shot? Also could you link the replacements you used?

ok, soft keys to recall a particular scene sounds interesting and I didn’t know that was possible. I ended up with the mackie big knob passive between the mixer and my monitors and that provides exactly what I wanted. I like the idea of scenes but I change things from time to time so really only use one scene. I think using 2 scenes for this one tiny thing would be a really wonky way of doing it, but cool it would work and setting particular scenes to soft keys sounds great, I might actually get around to using that feature. So far I mostly use those buttons for mutes.

My use case is actually way more silly. there is a youtube channel i check out and he is recording in stereo and it is just his voice and I find it super annoying to listen when he moves around. I’ve never encountered this with any other channels or whatever else I listen to but it made me realize a mono button would just be a nice convenience. Of course it will also be useful for other things too, but that stupid use case made me want that button.

yes the question is about stereo inputs and stereo mix outs. say i have a stereo channel on two inputs and i want to make it mono with a press of a button and back to stereo with a press of a button. or same thing with a stereo mix out. it is stereo and i want to quickly change it to mono and back. yes sum a stereo source to mono on a stereo input pair would work. I already ordered a mackie passive monitor controller (big knob passive) because I think what I want can’t be done on the mixer and really I guess I’m fine with another little piece of equipment I can stick up where people normally place an ipad or iphone on my qu32. it would give me a mono button and a dim button and another way to mute and I guess a big knob but I have a fader handy and a mute button pretty handy. I just want the mono button really.

Makes sense, thanks for the explanation. I think I can make scenes work for what I want to do. I’d still like a button to switch between usb, local, dsnake, but it is a minor quibble. I’ve owned this mixer for years now and I’m still figuring out the best way to use it and leaning all the features.

I would like this too. I’m amazed it was never fixed with a firmware update. the board saves the state of every single thing other than the layer setting?

I guess this was never changed? It is my one minor gripe with this board. every time I turn it on I have to switch to the custom layer.

I use a qu32. I had a qu16 but stumbled upon a 32 for only a little more than what I knew I could sell the qu16 for so went for it. It is a monster compared to the 16, which I don’t mind but some people might if you don’t have the desk space. I also struggled with having enough inputs and outputs. I hate messing with cables and found I also don’t like traditional pathways because in my experience after a few chains they are noisy and just more cable mess.

A while back I got an ab168 so I could Have enough inputs and outputs for an electronic drum set and just run an Ethernet cable to it. That worked great and since I have the qu32 on one desk and a bunch of equipment on another I though another stagebox would be nice so I can link the two desks with an Ethernet cable, so I got an ar2412. Ok so with both stageboxes and the physical inputs on the qu32 I can plug in a ton of stuff but I was not completely satisfied. I wanted more channels and I still wanted a lot of gear off a patchbay so I can route things to each other without Routing then through the mixer.

What I landed on to finish my setup is an old extron mav plus 3232a stereo matrix. It will matrix switch 32 stereo inputs and 32 stereo outputs. It can be network controlled and has buttons on the front to patch ins and outs. Best part is it was around $175 on eBay. That is absolutely absurd for all it can do. It also has attenuation and mutes and some other stuff, I haven’t fully explored it yet, but hat is awesome with this setup I now have something like 140 physical inputs and 80 physical outputs. I can easily connect all my gear and have tons of ins/outs still available. Granted I can only work with 38 inputs and 20 outputs on the mixer at once, but that is plenty for me. I can easily route anything in and out as I want without messing with cables. To link the stereo matrix to my qu32 I’m eating the group outputs so that gives me 4 stereo channels. And I’m eating 12 line inputs on the qu32 so that lets me bring in up to 6 stereo channels from the matrix. But that is a tiny fraction of my overall channels and I don’t think I really need to any more connections that that, but I could add some more if needed.

All this said if you do go sq you can use stage boxes, link multiple mixers, and use the AHM64. That would provide a ton of options but also cost a ton. The old extron audio matrix boxes do a lot of the same things for dirt cheap in comparison.

Anyway I really like my combo of AH qu32, ab168, ar2412, and extron mav plus 3232a. It finally gives me all the channels I need with plenty of room to grow.

Well windows output devices are outputs from windows but on the mixer essentially they are inputs on the mixer. So they are both things at the same time depending on what device we are talking about. It definitely can get somewhat confusing. For my needs the default way it works seems ok so far. I am curious about the sq series though if anyone knows. Do those show up the same way in windows or is it different? I may upgrade eventually.

Ok, so without virtual audio cable or anything like that I have 3 stereo audio devices. My question was can I get more than that by doing something on the mixer or is that some set limit. Typically I set channels 1-26 and st1-st3 as the inputs in reaper then I leave 27-32 as windows audio devices and it works fine. I can send main pc audio back and discord audio back and I don’t use the 3rd stereo channel and at the same time I can record the channels I assigned in reaper. This was just a general question about how the qu32 shows up in windows audio devices without any 3rd party routing. I have read the manuals and I didn’t see this explained anywhere, but maybe I missed it. Thanks for the help.

You are not understanding my question. In windows audio devices channels 27-28 are an audio output device. As are channels 29-30 and 31-32. So a total of 3 stereo devices. I can assign discord to one and my other pc audio to one and then something else to the third. My question is this. Is there a way to get more channels in windows audio devices like these 6. I know how it works from a DAW.

easy enough, can set PAFL on my stage box, great! thank you!

from what i’ve gathered it is just good to spend some time mixing in mono and getting things settled there then switch to stereo.

stage box pafl would be awesome as i have an ab168 and don’t use most of the outputs. how do I set pafl to a pair of those outs?

Ok I would want it so I can pafl to any mix and it will sound balanced in my ears but it would be balanced in the center for recording. I have a headphone amp that has a balance option and I have that off a mic out for when I want to use iems but I like to keep my main headphones off of the mixer headphone out since pafl is so nice to have. It just seems like a logical option to have to help people like me who hear significantly worse in one ear.

As for why to sum to mono because that is a common thing when mixing in the box so I would assume it is sometimes useful for live mixing. I use my mixer mostly for studio use though.

Really these things are not crucial, just things I think would be nice to have. I can achieve them with a small mixer off the headphone out if I can’t do it inside the qu. I’m actually kind it surprised no box exists like this. I see things that are close but I just want to take a headphone input give me balance, gain reduction and a sum to mono option And a headphone output. Seems simple but all I can find that does it are mixers and I’m unsure how dumping a headphone output into two mixer inputs will turn out.

Ok here is a thought. Can I have a mix out follow pafl? Or do I have to use the headphone out for it?

Thanks guys! Found it in the group routing page. Channel source was set to post-eq. Moved that to post-all and now I hear the compression.
