Perhaps the Midas M32R Live could be a working system for this purpose. Another guy in a german forum changed to it from QU and was very glad with it. 32 channels. More free routing options than QU, good sound, but not so modern surface/touch-display like the A&H’s. Price is o.k. also…

I solved the problem with my QU 16 in buying an old used Lenovo Thinkpad TP 410 (only true USB 2.0 ports) and upgraded it with an SSD and slim Windows-installation.

Or another solution would be using a SQ5 with Dante card, so with LAN-connection and not with USB 2…

So at least as an user, who specially buyed an used Lenovo TP 410 only for having a working system…

I think, USB per se perhaps will not be a future solution for multitrack recording and playback. If sometimes my Lenovo will break down my further solution will be to own a mixer with the possibility of LAN connection for this purposes (multitrackrecording and playback with a modern DAW like Cubase for example), for example with Dante protocol. This would be possible with the SQ series, but unfortunally not with the QU series. The only drop of bitterness is the price of the Dante-card until now. Perhaps future mixer should have this onboard as initial equipment! This would have a lot of advantages, not at least, that the lenght of cable don’t matter!!! Important, if the mixer is placed some where in the band-room, and the laptop near the keyboarder, like me, controlling this from my keyboard position.

We will not get a solution because this seems not to be solvable from A&H because of necessarity to change hardware ore complete new software of this mixers (other mixers like Midas M32R don’t have this problem, as I heard). But you are true… this must be solved in future products of A&H!!! Until this time, perhaps Dante-Card in SQ’s will be the only solution…?!?!

And I am also a little bit disappointed, that A&H does not clear and honest explain, that this will not work with their otherwise perfect mixers and at which time they will be able to present a new way of multitrack transmissiom, for example via LAN…

ad 1) I had a lot of problems with a brandnew Lenovo 16 GB ram, i7, SSD laptop because it has only USB 3 ports. Especially playback is impossible… always “electric noise” from time to time… After this I bought an old used Lenovo Thinkpad 410 with 8 GB ram, i5 an SSD, only USB 2 ports, and it run’s. Bur I want to have a fast solution, and this is LAN, so I need for example a Dante solution. REcording on “USB-Drive” ist not the problem, only connection via USB-B to a laptop… But USB 2 will die sloly, so I need a solution for the future and this only can be LAN…

ad 2) Until now I never had problems with connecting the QU16 to my tablet for operating the mixer. I use Mixing Station Pro, a powerful and nearly perfect app. I can customize this app in any way I need. Because I don’t manage huge shows, only playing in a “garage band” also, I never had problems. So I am the keyboarder and audio-technican of the band in one person an have to do both at same time. So I have my tablet on the keyboard and do the little mixing from song to song from there. So I never sit at the mixer itself, and I am much more used to the Mixing Station App surface now. But you are right… WiFi always can be a problem. I only use it for the Mixing Station App. Multitrackrecording or plybacks I would like to connect via LAN cable and I think, this should be possible with the Dante card. And it schould also be possible to mangae Faders, Mute and some other thins with MIDI from the DAW using this LAN-cable…

Two reasons for wishing a rack-mixer is: Smaller and cheaper…. Of course it would be perfect to have a SQ 5, but I need the Dante card also, 700.-, perhaps a Stagebox, 940.-, so I have the amount of about 4000.- for everything. With a rackmixer I don’t need a stagebox and I could get everything for perhaps about 1700.- or so…

    @volounteer:
“Should not need any database of drives that might work.
They should just work. Period. Like they all do in my PC.

Some usb flash drives work. others do not work. mostly seems random.”

Yes that’s true, but it depends on how fast the drives can read/write audiostreams und there seem to be differences. The traffic for audiostreaming of a lot of channels in *.wav format seems to be enormous…

And on the backside of the QU16 below the USB-Socket you can read “USB B 2.0”. It is pitty but this means, that this is the working standard. A&H couldn’t know, that Intel changed the downcompatibility routines with USB 3 standard… I think, that’s the reason for the problems… but anyway, we have to live with it in some way, testing working solutions or buy another mixer, for example Midas M32R, which has not such USB-problems, as I know until now…

I can live with the USB problems now, using a working USB-stick (did buy 5 of them for the future) an using my old Lenovo Thinkpad 410. And when Corona is over, I will test the above printer-USB-cable, if it solves the problem with my new Lenovo Ideapad, which has only USB 3 ports on mainboard (The mixer is not at home, so I am not able to test in the moment).

In the operation manual and on the backside of the mixer they say “use USB2”. And that means for USB-B-mode connection to a PC. The USB-devices for the USB-Drive mode are another problem. Some USB-drives work, others not… I work with Sandisk Extreme 32 Gb without problems and also with an LaCie hardisk… The database with possible USB-drives was helpful to find a working one…
I told above, that A&H will not be able to solve the problem with USB-B mode, because their hardware is fix, not possible to change afterwards, so we have to live with the used hardware. That USB 3 now is the standard, while the mixer development based on USB 2, is a problem, which cannot be solved by A&H, I think, specifically for the older mixer-series…

No, I am sorry but that’s not true: USB 3 is NOT completely downcompatibel to USB 2. That’s the reason for all this problems. There are differences in handling audio-streams! Only true USB2 ports work without problems (like in my old Lenovo TP 410, it does not depend on the operating system, but on the USB-architecture). It depends on the motherboards. There are differences between older pc’s with purely USB2 archtecture or both, real USB2 AND USB3 ports and newer ones with pseudo-USB2 ports, but purely USB3 architecture, with only pseudo-downcompatibility to USB2. In common applications you will not find a difference or problems, but in the special way, how A&H-Boards manage audiostreaming via USB, it is necessarry to have true USB2 ports with the corresponding old USB2-architecture. So to find a solution, that it works with true USB3 mainboards also, is the reason, why this thread exists since 2 years or so… A&H cannot solve it, because they cannot change the complete audiostream handling on their old QU-series. So every note, wich could be a solution, can help… but there are more posts, which tried different cables, never it was a solution for everybody… so perhaps I will try this special printer-USB2-cable also… did order it via Amazon… 🙂

@SteffenR: Would be the best, but some new laptops don’t have USB 2, so we need every solution/try available for pc’s wirhout USB2. I bought an old used Lenovo TP 410 laptop for this purpose, but how long it will survive?

Yes, I wondered also, that in QU documentation it is not really explained. The explanation of all buttons is much more complete in the dLive PDF… Okay, there are some FX-engines, which are not included in the QU-series, but I picked out the included FX-engines… I think, the problem is, that the FX-engines perhaps are not programmed by A&H but by external suppliers? And A&H did “forget” to “update” the FX-engine-section of the QU? Anywy, now I got more information about the QU included features “Delay, Reverb, Phaser, Chorus, ADT-Doubler”… that’s enough for me at this point…

Wow! Cool! Much more information than in the QU 16 reference guide! Thank you very much!!!!!

That’s VERY VERY interesting and would be such an easy solution!!! Did anybody else already test this? I had no chance until now, because the QU16 is not close to me… but I will try to test within 2 or 3 weeks. At first I would test, if the distortions will disappear, connecting the laptop without powersupply. If this occures, I would buy the

    iFi Defender 3.0

Perhaps this will be an absolut easy and not expensive solution for all this problems since a lot of years!!! Hope dies last!

No, Version 1.95 alwas up to date and no solution because this is a internal problem, which will not be solved with firmware-updates. Only all above possibilites for solutions. Everybody has to try, if something helps for him…

I only can talk about QU 16, perhaps anybody else about SQ7?

One question about the “re-gain” function: If I want to regain for example the guitar, because it gets “red” often, but the monitormix loudness should stay the same, how do I have to adjust the function “Re-Gain” of the app? Do I have to activate all Adjust-buttons (Sends, LR/M, Gate and Compressor) or only single? Thanks for help…

Wow, Tizian, great work!!! I gave up until now and used only an old Lenovo Thinkpad TP 410 with only USB 2.0 ports with my QU 16… this worked fine, but I always feared the day, when the TP 410 blows out his live :-(. But with your solution I will try to use again my brandnew Lenovo ideapad with only USB 3 ports for this. I ordered the two cables yet. I had always digital noise, when playback music from the USB 3 laptop to the QU 16. No difference, if playing simple mp3 or multitrack recordings from Cubase… Underneath I do only recordings to USB-stick and rearrange at home on the PC with Cubase. I mostly need the USB for recording. Playback I give into the mixer via stereoinput out of a tablet…
