Hmmmm, I am using windows… so it is more complicated there?

Sorry, don’t know how to work with “source code”… how do I get the program out of the code? Or is it to complicated for a non PC specialist?

One correction after reading more: Ardour is not free by paying, but you have different payment-opportunities and I think the price is quite fair…

Ardour… I googeled a little bit… very interesting! Seems to be free and seems to have everything, you need for multitrack-recording and playback… so perhaps I will test it. I could not find so much, for me relevant, differences to Cubase Pro.
    I need:
Subsequent processing with EQ, reverb, compressor, delay and all this things, changing volume of each track in the mix (perhaps with automatation for solo parts etc.) and above all also transpose and speed change without change of pitch and last but not least export to mp3 … If I got it right, then Ardour has all these features? Plus different “soundcards” for input and output, which is better than Cubase and should sovle the digital noise problem, when playing back music to the A&H… 🙂

So if I understand it correct: You route the multitrack instrument channels of the QU console via usb to the DAW and the output of the DAW via the normal sound card of the PC back to the mixer (then probably with a jack cable?). So the way to the mixer via USB and the way back via the jack cable? I didn’t find a possibility to set different sound cards for the input and output of the DAW in Cubase Pro, which I am using…

    Hi Hugh,

interesting what you write. I took a look at the RME Firefase UFX +. Of course it costs more than 2000 € and I’m not sure as a layman whether this will help us with our USB2 to USB3 problem, for example with the A&H QU 16. Would I somehow loop the RME Fireface between mixer and DAW? And if so, how?

And do you prefer the Waves protocol over the Dante? Where do you see the advantage? Because the SQ series can process both cards…

The more I think about it and research it, I come to the conclusion that USB is not or cannot be the solution for a sufficient audio stream in the long run. Especially with higher channel numbers. The future will be LAN which has sufficient bandwidth and compatibility. At the moment, the Dante protocol would be a working way. If I were to buy a new mixer, I would always go for one that allows the installation of a Dante card as an audio interface. With that the QU series unfortunately falls flat. But in the SQ series this is possible (unfortunately not cheap, but at least it works properly). Otherwise there will be no solution for mixers programmed and designed on the hardware side according to USB 2.0 together with real USB3 ports of modern PCs. And Dante can do a lot more.
So conclusion: If you want working with audio streaming in or from a DAW, then buy a mixer with a Dante card or keep on looking to see if you can get something compatible by tra and error with the multiple tips here in the thread (I have A&H QU 16, with an old Lenovo Thinkpad TP 410 with pure USB 2.0 ports. That works). Or do without audio streaming to A&H devices that “only” specify USB 2.0 as the standard (thus actually all). I do the multirecording things there with a Sandisk Extreme 32 GB stick. I leaved USB-Audio-Streaming to the PC/DAW (or could do it with my good old TP410 with SSD) and I would buy a SQ5 with Dante-cared, if at some point there would be a need to absolutely have to use it.

Ah, o.k., I understand. I have the the Nordstage in 2 XLR inputs linked and the gain there is good… don’t use the stereo line inputs for instruments.

So it seems, that I have to regain every channel after switching from QU16 preamps to the AR2412 preamps, because these are different preamps. And have to see for every channel, if I need pad or not… O.k., so we will need a short soundcheck again after switching to the AR2412… no problem…

Could anybody explain, when I have to use the “pad” with the AR2412?
With the QU 16 I didn’t have this.
Is it correct to use the pad with microfones and no pad with keyboard, guitar, bass and drums?

O.k.. Tanks! So it is easy to change. Must only remember gain amount and phantom power and bring it at the same level…
What is the meaning of the “Pad” function?

Somebody asked “And perhaps they will find other ways to send data to other devices rather than with usb.” So that was my answer… for example with Dante-card. It is bad enough, that also me bought a mixer AH QU 16 for 1800.-€ and especially a laptop Lenovo Ideapad 16 GB RAM + SSD and Intel i7 processor for 1100.-€ to have a perfect combination for multitrack recording and playback with Cubase DAW and then I found out, that this amount brought this USB-streaming problems, which all people here know. After this I bought the used Lenovo Thinpad TP 410 from 2012 and this works! Crazy! But we will not be able to change it… This problem exists and it seems not to be solvable with software-update from side of A&H. Intel will not move a millimeter, because they are not interested in the littel amount of musicians. If we need a working solution with mordern pc’s we have to use for example Dante for SQ5 or another mixer like Midas MR32R with USB. We will not get a solution for QU-series. The A&H SQ and QU mixer are very good in sound, surface, quality, but they have the problem, that they need USB 2 for working multitrack-handling. So… who needs mutlitrack-recording/-playback directly to the DAW, he will have a big chance of problems. If somebody is glad with multitrackrecording und playback with a working USB-stick or harddisk (not every device works, also there you have to know or test, which one is working… the list of working devices is in the internet), he gets a very good mixer. Everybody must know this and decide! Problem is, that the distributors perhaps don’t tell it to the customers (like I has to learn). so you have to hope, that a lot of interested customers read this thread, so that they are able to decide correct, which mixer they want to buy and for what purpose…

@SteffenR -> Fankonia… so you are not a long distance away from me… Ingolstadt 🙂

    You wrote

So I thought, you know about problems with Dante standard? Perhaps I did it understand wrong…

I don’t understand, what you mean… Problems with Dante…? And Dante is not really the future. It is relatively old, but seems to work, as I heard. But it is expensive… about 600-700€ for the Dante card. But cheaper than buying a new mixer. Unfortunately it is not available for QU-series, only SQ. That was the reason, why I was thinking about changing my QU 16 to SQ5 with Dante card. But it was to expensive for the purpose, I need it. For me it is enough to do multitrack-recording on a USB-stick and rearrange it at home on the DAW. I gave up to do this “on the fly” with laptop connected to the mixer, although my used at eBay bought Lenovo TP410 with SSD works without problems. It has only USB 2 ports :-).

The other way to send data is LAN. You can use a Dante card for LAN with a SQ5 mixer for example…
