Thank you, Allen & Heath, for adding my requested feature (at the start of this thread) to the v1.6 firmware for Qu. I was pleasantly surprised to see it in the new feature list.
It would have been perfect if the updated QuPad app had supported this PAFL-follows-master-strip-selection feature too, but it seems that it works only from the desk itself. Who knows, in a future QuPad update…?

    Hi Kibosh,

In my personal opinion, you should seriously consider one of the Behringer X32 consoles, for the reasons that you mentioned (more flexible in terms of functionality, and better price/performance ratio). I was very tempted by the Behringers myself, and probably would have been happy using one.
Behringer sells these consoles in rediculously large numbers, so they cannot afford serious quality issues. They also seem quick to expand the functionality with firmware updates (but Allen&Heath seem to be catching up quickly with the Qu firmware updates).
However, be prepared to spend some time getting to know the X32 well, because it’s so packed with features that you may sometimes have trouble finding your way around. I think the X32 user interface demonstrates that this is only the second digital console that Behringer have ever designed (the DDX3216 was the first, I still have mine, and still like it 🙂 ).

    Hi Kibosh,

I can’t help with the Ableton Live questions (although most seem to have been answered already), but I will try to answer your custom layer and channel count question.

The Qu mixer range (Qu-16, Qu-24, Qu-32) has the indicated number of mono input channels (so 16 for the Qu-16, 24 for the Qu-24, etc.) plus three stereo input channels. That’s it, no additional spare channels like on some other digital desks. However, where the signals for these channels come from is configurable. Using USB or dSnake doesn’t add channels, it only provides additional sources for these channels.

In addition to the input channels, there are auxes, effects, and for some desks also subgroups and matrices, occupying the same faders as for the input channels, but on the second fader layer. The custom fader layer is simply a way to select faders from the first and second fader layer into a single layer, so you don’t have to switch between the layers all the time. It doesn’t add anything new that isn’t already on the existing fader layers.
(That’s how it works on my Qu-16. I’m not familiar with the Qu-24 or Qu-32, but I would think it works the same way there.)

    Hope this helps.

Are you referring to one of the internal effects units, or to an external effects unit?

For the internal effects units, you can use the FX1 or FX2 bus (or even one of the mono mix buses) to send the desired channels to the effects unit, and switch off the channels in the main LR mix (if I understand correctly what you mean by “serial effects unit”). The effect return can then be sent to main LR (100% wet).

For an external effects unit, I think you would have to use one of the mono or stereo mix buses and corresponding outputs to send the channel mix to the effects unit, and use one of the inputs (probably a stereo input) to feed the return signal to main LR. In this case you should also switch off the channels in the main LR mix, so you hear only the effect return (100% wet).
As far as I know, Qu-16 will not let you patch insert points to physical outputs/inputs. Each connector on the back has a fixed dedicated role, similar to what an analog console would provide.

To switch a channel on or off in a mix, select the mix, then hold down Assign and press Select for the desired channel(s). The channel fader will still control any post-fader effect sends, so you can control the level into the effects units.

    I hope this helps.

No, not just the two of you. There are undoubtedly more people who would like to be able to use more than one Qu-Pad at the same time (and I am one of them). But given the fact that both iLive and GLD have that ability, I’m guessing (hoping) that it’s already on the feature list for a future firmware update. Let’s wait and see.

I also got a Western Digital Elements (1TB), and it seems to work well. You have to let the Qu-16 reformat the drive, because is it NTFS formatted out-of-the-box, and the Qu-16 only supports FAT32 formatted drives (as far as I know).

I tried a Verbatim Store’n’Go 500GB drive, which is FAT32 formatted already, but the Qu-16 didn’t recognize it, so that Verbatim drive won’t work.

    Regards, Hans

The Gator Cases GMIX-12PU-TSA case will accept a Qu-16 with rack mount kit fitted. The case has a pup-up mechanism, detachable lid, and TSA latches.
Although the Gator Cases website doesn’t mention the GMIX-12PU-TSA when you search for Qu-16 cases, I can confirm that it fits, because I have just installed my Qu-16 in one.
