Awesome, thanks so much fellas! The input helps a lot.
At this point, I think I’ve trumped the idea of buying this tape deck off my friend. It needs work and my money would probably be best invested elsewhere.
My thing with the QU16 is I feel like I’ve paid a lot of money for features that I don’t necessarily need. I like the DAW control and whatnot…but it’s not necessary. At this point I’d like to make the best investment on a quality multichannel preamp (need 16 channels total for my studio) and quality AD/DA conversion. I would return my QU16 if I felt another route would give me higher quality results into the DAW.
Does the ZED R16 have better preamps than the QU16?
Should I look into buying separate modules (A multichannel preamp routed into a standalone AD Converter into the computer) for these two purposes? Would that have a better chance at best possible sound quality? Would it be noticeable over the all-in-one QU16?
I know these are all a bit subjective but I’d rather know that my money was spent on the best mic pres and conversion rather than fancy bells and whistles if that makes sense. Though the features of the QU16 are nice. I only use this for studio recording/mixing. Not live.
cheers
trevor2014/08/02 at 11:15 pm #41218Hey GCumbee,
Thanks for the reply here. That helps to have your opinion. It seems like what you are saying confirms that the QU16 would not work well with this since you could not utilize all 16 tracks. Kinda bums me out that there are no physical outputs or inserts for each channel on the QU16. 🙁 Really limits studio functionality.
I think I’m beginning to steer away from the idea of using tape. It seems like everyone says it doesn’t make that much difference and if it’s not a great tape deck then it most likely won’t be worth the hassle.
Any other thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks again,

Trevor2014/07/20 at 12:41 am #40917dhak,
I’ve tried turning off all other programs and still I’m having these problems with the faders “flying randomly”. It’s very strange but has to be some setting that’s off. Trying to figure this out ASAP.
Hopefully A&H can tune in and help with this otherwise I’ll be going back to my Mackie ONYX. 🙁
2014/07/20 at 12:38 am #40916Hey tinman,
I resolved the issue with the ST1 track by doing the firmware update to 1.5 on the QU16. It now routes properly with everything I’ve tested except for google chrome. Firefox works however.
Unfortunately, this created a new issue with my faders. They now “fly randomly” when functioning as DAW control via midi. When I move any fader up and down, other ones will fly to the bottom for no reason. This has to be due to some MIDI setting within logic causing it not to communicate properly with the parameters being sent by the QU16. I just don’t what it is.
I have everything set the way A&H has recommended for Logic Pro 9. I’m running the latest everything. OSX 10.9.4 : firmware 1.5 : DAW Control 1.3 : Logic 9.1.8
It’s also popping and clicking when I record to the computer. It’s printing this noise onto the tracks. So, right now, my board is not functional. This is the second one I’ve picked up from guitar center. They traded it out thinking the first one was just faulty.
Hope this gets resolved somehow.
cheers
trevor2014/07/03 at 4:33 pm #40554Hi,
I appreciate the reply but that’s the whole reason I posted this topic…
I had found another thread with your recommendation, so I did all that and still no luck. I’ve done it about 10 times, double checking everything that you listed. It SHOULD be working but it’s not. Like I said, in the Audio MIDI Setup/configure speakers window, the test sounds get routed properly but still itunes and everything is going to ch1 and ch2. I’ve restarted, I’ve updated, I’ve tried over and over with no luck. It’s just not working the way it should be.
I do have it working through ST1 within Logic Pro but that’s because I can go in and change the routing within the program. For some reason iTunes and other programs that rely on that Audio MIDI Setup configuration are not syncing with the setting I’m providing. It’s very strange. Does that make sense what I am explaining?
cheers
Trevor2014/07/03 at 2:46 pm #40552anybody else having this problem or have an answer for this issue??? I’d really like to resolve this ASAP.
THANKS!!
Trevor2014/07/02 at 4:27 am #40513haahaha that’s just great
2014/07/02 at 4:21 am #40511sent you a reply BTW
2014/07/02 at 4:12 am #40509Ok, I’m now fully updated to 10.9.4 (thought it was going to 10.9.3 like you but I guess .4 is the latest) and still nothing man.
2014/07/02 at 3:59 am #40507Well, I’m updating now but when I was having the problem it was with 10.9.2, which is even weirder since that’s what was working for you. Oh technology. There’s always something.
2014/07/02 at 3:30 am #40505Ahhhh man that sucks haha
2014/07/02 at 3:23 am #40503Sweet, hopefully that fixes the problem and I’ll do the same.
2014/07/02 at 3:18 am #40501Now I just tried routing to ST2 (19 & 20) and ST3 (21 $ 22) but still no luck. Always double checking that the source is USB. Also just so you know, I’ve made sure my global source is USB streaming and not the QuDrive.
2014/07/02 at 3:11 am #40498Man, this is really frustrating. I’d already double checked that I was selecting “USB” and not “local” for my ST1 source. I’m getting no real signal through ST1. The test signal works though! Isn’t that weird? I’ve got 17 & 18/stereo selected under the audio Midi setup window. I’m just getting no signal from the non-DAW programs. It’s very strange and really annoying because I don’t know what else to do. I really hope my board isn’t defective. I just bought it brand new.
thanks for the reply Dan.
