    Hi all

Many thanks for the help guys – it is much appreciated. You’ve confirmed pretty much what I thought.

DavidCo, I use SM58 mics but not the new SM58 PEQ factory setting which I find a little harsh and ringy. The ADT effect I do use on one of the spare mix sends as my FX 1 and FX2 sends are used for verb and delay and we only get 2 dedicated sends on the QU16. I’ve found it doesnt really add much.

In terms of compression I use a threshold of -18dB, a ratio of 3.2:1 with a make-up gain of 6dB (normal attack and release for vox). Any higher on that ratio and gain and I’d be worried about feedback.

I think I need to just grow a pair and tell them to quieten down a little!!

BTW, the IP2000 speakers have proven to be plenty loud enough so far and I’m really pleased with them. Just in this particular pub, with loads of reflective surfaces and low ceilings, I was paranoid about not pushing them too far and deafening everyone with feedback.

Please keep the suggestions coming if you have any.

    Again, your help is appreociated.

    Cheers

Here’s another shout out for Howard at Base Sound. Had a 121 session with him on Thursday and found it incredibly useful. It’s great to know that you’re doing at least some things right, and equally important to get pro insight into the things you could be doing a lot better (or even wrong!). Howard is patient, very professional and understands what you’re looking to get out of the session – he listens. Can’t recommend him highly enough.

Had the same issue tonight when upgrading the firmware. For me, simply unplugging the usb worked. It went immediately back into the screen is was in before as if nothing was out of the ordinary. Suggests a bit of misplaced coding in the upgrade procedure, but no harm done.

Figured it out now… the send was on prefader. Set this to post fader and voila. It all works. BUT here’s an interesting thing. I tested this on mix 7-8, 9-10. For the same effect, with all faders set pretty much the same, I was getting horrendous feedback on 9-10, but 7-8 no feedback at all. I am perplexed as to why there is a difference. ..

Yeah sorry Bob, forgot to mention that FX3 return was also set to the desired level but this didn’t work either. I’ve also checked that the channels are not muted.

Yes – downloaded the app from Google Play. Everything seems to work just fine from my admittedly brief play around. Can’t wait to try it for real.

Ahh – got that, thanks. That was exactly how I was experimenting last night. May aim is to get as much done as I can before I even get to the venue… then it’s all about balance and a little but of tweaking. I am often astounded at just how muddy the sound is with most pub/small venue gigs. I did my very first one a couple of weeks ago on a Yamaha analogue desk and managed to get something better in a matter of minutes, and it was commented on by the audience. And with the QU-16, it will be much more like working with my DAW (Ableton) which I use to produce my own music with a friend – it has a very familiar feel, so the workflow is just something I need to learn and perfect.

Was also glad to have gotten the QU Mixing Station Pro to work with desk straight out of the box. Kinda irks me that A&H don’t do Android as I resent the inflated prices Apple charge for their kit (don’t deny it’s well made though), so very happy to have a least some of the functionality to use on my Galaxy Pad.

Thanks again everyone. Your help is very much appreciated.

I’ll only be needed at most 4 monitors (as the lead vocals are shared – they share the same monitor mix as well), so plenty to share. Not sure how to allocate FX3 or FX4 to a mix channel though. I think the manual is a good reference guide, but not so good for a newbie like me – walk throughs of common tasks would be appreciated. Speaking of which, is there any formal training on this mixer anywhere in the South East of the UK? I’d happily pay….

That’s great stuff – thanks everyone.

Croydon, your post intrigued me and inspired me all at once. The idea of saving two of the FX slots for songs is a great idea as the band I’ll be working with is a covers band with a set list spanning 3 decades, and some of the songs vocals could really benefit from different reverbs.

When you say you manage level through the sends, I’m not sure how to do this with FX3 and FX4 as I would usually use Mix>return on the back panel, but FX3 and FX4 don’t have a dedicated FX mix bus bus like FX1 and FX2?? What is your workflow with this?

Many thanks again – it’s been a great help and just makes me want to get to use it quickly like an impatient child at Xmas!
