Reason for leaving rack ears on is that I have a tall road case on wheels with a horizontal rack mount for the mixer, but sometimes I do gigs where I just bring the mixer and DX’s so don’t need or have the space to fit the tall case. Not a huge deal, but nice if I can just leave the rack ears on so switch is quick and easy. Also have a keyboard stand that when closed narrow the mixer sits right between the rails with the rack ears on. Almost got the SKB r-100, but kinda of like the Gator MIX192108 and the version above that has the table top. Have also thought about just getting one of the gig bags that the SQ-5 will fit into.

Look at Chapter 13 in the manual, specifically chapter 13.3 on how to connect the SQ to your computer via the USB-B connection on the back. Once connected to computer use the DAW software of your choice. Regarding using the USB-B interface, Waves card, or Dante card, Keith from Allen & Heath posted this a while back:

Of course after I posted I noticed your comment “SQ speakers driver” so are you using Windows? If so, disregard everything I said, maybe somebody with WIN experience and SQ can comment.

It’s using core audio and you would think it requires 96kHz/24-bit wave files, but I’ve had something interest results. Seems to play anything out of iTunes including mp3’s. Youtube plays if it has a high res like 1080p option for the video, but low res I just get noise. It could be something with how a particular app uses the OS X core audio, mahybe somewhere an upsample or file conversion that not all apps access? Anyone else or A&H have any insight into the interworkings of audio file formats, sample rates, and core audio with the USB-B interface?

Well the way to be sure this works ($$) would be to get the Waves Expansion Card, set up Sound Grid server and use inserts to and from Waves. Not too familiar with Waves plugins, but believe they have something like what you want. Others might know for sure, but believe this is the lowest latency (Maybe Dante, depending on outboard set up) you can get other than the A&H native plug-ins. As far as routing to a DAW I think the latency would prevent this from being a viable solution, although I’ve heard/read others discussing a similar workflow, so maybe they have some experience. For the routing it would be input channel out to a USB-B channel into DAW, out of DAW to a USB-B input on the SQ-5 then the input USB channel patched to L/R Main, Auxes etc. You’ll eat up two channels, one for input and one for return USB. Maybe try 1 channel to hear the results. However, don’t test with just the 1 channel, make sure you have other inputs not routing in/out USB-B so you can observe any latency artifacts.

Agree with airickess, not sure I’d want the feature. Question was more out of curiosity. Read somewhere that the Yamaha (Maybe CL or QL) and a few other consoles have this option. Haven’t wrapped my head around the MCA yet, but sounds interesting.

This has always been one of my favorite mix videos. One thing I could never figure out is if he was sending a pre-fader mix to the groups, which I don’t think you can do on the SQ. Otherwise the changes between the channel faders and the group fader have to be very slight. You can pull the group fader all the way to infinity and take away the compression, but if you take the channel faders down to far (via DCA or individually) you don’t get enough signal to the group fader. So really no way to go all compression, but maybe a blend? Of course maybe I’ve missed something in how to set this up.

I believe when they released 1.3.X Keith made an announcement here. Although I don’t see much traffic, there is also an A&H newsletter you can subscribe too.

Thanks for the input. I’ll check both of those out.

I have the latest firmware (1.3) and haven’t had any non-operator issues recording with SQ-Drive multi-track. Same with previous version 1.2.2, however I did have to go through a number of
USB devices before I found one that worked and ironically it was one of the less expensive solutions, a Seagate 1TB backup plus drive. It was not the fastest device
I tested, so I’m not sure issues are speed related, although that’s a factor, it seems more or at least partially to do with how the drive handles through put of writing/streaming data or perhaps how the SQ-Drive writes the stream, such it seems to work rock solid with some devices and errors out with others that should easily meet the requirement.

Piers – thanks I’ll check the buffer size first when I get a chance to test.
