Yup. Good idea.
Could also do this in the DAW too.
2020/10/08 at 1:51 pm #95568Thanks guys. This is for a recording setting, so setting ALT OUT to PAFL seems like best approach here so I can cycle through the artists’ mixes (5/6, 7/8, 9/10, Groups 1/2, and 3/4).
2020/10/08 at 12:20 pm #95564Yes, if you want to listen to mix 9-10 in headphones plugged into the
headphone jack.Excellent.
Alt Out follow the same logic/routing?
2020/10/08 at 11:01 am #95562We’re you selecting PAFL on the master fader after you selected mix 9-10 with the blue mix select button?
No. Should I be?
2020/10/08 at 1:33 am #95550Sorry guys, didn’t give much info here, had to jet.
Mix 9-10 has (had) several live mics routed to it; player could hear the mix in his cans, which were directly connected to the Mix Outputs 9/10 XLRs on the back (to a Behringer P1 PowerPlay headphone amp).
I was going to tweak some EQ/compression on the channels while at the mixer, but couldn’t hear anything out of my headphone output on the Qu. I could hear the main mix, and playback from DAW (routed to 27/28), but when I selected Mix 9-10, heard nothing live from the channels at all, except a lot of hiss actually. Felt really noisy. Only 3 faders up, all guitar mics on the cabinet plus a DI. Again, artist heard everything fine, I just couldn’t hear anything on my cans.
Channel levels were all good: -18dBFS in the DAW, peaks hitting 0 on the channel LEDs.

2020/07/13 at 7:16 pm #93342You need to listen to it yourself. For me there is zero difference except the SQ is bigger with more features.
That’s not going to be feasible at all; nobody’s renting them, most stores around here don’t carry them in stock.
Have you actually tracked through both of them?
2020/07/13 at 1:53 pm #93333So basically nobody on this thread has gone from Qu to SQ and can comment intelligently on the differences in the analog path and/or conversion?
2020/07/11 at 2:48 pm #93288Excellent. Anyone move from the Qu to the SQ series? really curious about the sonics in a recording setting.
2020/07/11 at 12:49 pm #93286then the step from QU to SQ will not change that much
you should try before you buy
since Canada is a bit far for me to send you a test SQ I will suggest contact the local A&H dealer to support you on the change
maybe they help with a test SQConverters haven’t changed much I take it then.
The real dealbreaker with MOTU’s AVB line and the Orion 32+ is that they don’t offer the Qu-You app, or anything resembling a “musician-proof” web/tablet experience for personal mixing. It really is a killer feature of the Qu series.
I see that SQ has the SQMix, but it looks a lot more like the QuApp. Is there a comparable SQYou app for personal mixes?
2020/07/03 at 10:36 pm #93126I am of the opinion the SQ5 is the best 16 channel live desk value available anywhere: and the addition of a DX168 clearly establishes the 32 channel favorite status. However while I am perfectly comfortable with the SQ5 and DX168 capturing live audio for my video recorder scratch tracks and establishing multi-track redundant recordings for post production the SQ is not an ideal studio desk. Todays layered tracking requires gear that is optimized to meet a host of chores that the SQ is not designed to accommodate. The addition of a Waves or Dante card helps a lot however this too will require investment in additional gear.
The SQ 5 now offers a fabulous opportunity to work with world class processing for a very modest investment but careful selection of appropriate ancillary studio gear will be much more expensive.I have been recording my band on a Qu-24 for a few years now and have been generally pleased with the results, and actually find it suits our live-off-the-floor approach: when I want to get surgical with my edits and have complete isolation in our one-room setup, Qu-You plus Behringer P1 headphone amps off the Mix and Group Outs means we have high-end personal mixing at bargain pricing.
I find the preamps to be serviceable and on the cleaner side, but I use various 1073/1072 and API clones for most tracking duties.
I don’t mix on the desk at all though: it’s essentially a zero latency headphone mixer and USB interface with a lot of inputs, which is what I need, as I’m often tracking 20 tracks at once. I do all my mixing at home in my home studio, completely ITB.
So essentially the Qu would be a step-up in converters and preamps (hopefully) and with the DEEP additions, make a decent choice for mixing.
2020/07/02 at 9:43 pm #93081See, I’ve A/Bed before with 96KHz, and didn’t notice a huge difference, probably thanks to 30 years drumming and using a budget interface (Scarlett 1st gen).
I’m more interested in direct comparisons between Qu and SQ, to see if it’s worth my while.
2019/09/06 at 2:29 am #86219ah, ok. Thanks everyone.
2019/09/05 at 1:39 am #86202I tried that, but the mute seemed to be global.
2019/09/04 at 2:10 am #86184I don’t plan on using the main mix at all (Qu-24 is only used in a studio setting for tracking and headphone mixes). But will pre allow muting of channels on say Mix 5/6 that won’t affect Mix 6/7?
