I think with the SQ’s, it’s all too easy to accidentally go to adjust a monitor mix, only to find yourself on the main LR by mistake.
If the scribble strips (as colour coded) in the main mix, changed to a uniform colour when the monitor mix was selected (all white, as an example), it would be really very obvious! Can’t understand why A&H don’t implement this (or even just a flashing led!), it would make things a lot clearer to me.

Hey MrBaum, thanks for your comments.
I do actually feel that many user would get the benefit of being able to change the colours on the aux mixes, either all one colour of your choice, or it could be left to match the colours on the main L/R mix. (As is currently how it already is)

Maybe it’s just me, but when I use the fader flip mode, I always know where I’m at on the mixer) You could have a different set of colours for each aux, just as an example.

The abilty to choose between the 2 different setups would be the best option I reckon!

    Hi, hopefully this might help.

You can create and store your own custom I/O patching, selecting the ‘Library’ button when you’re on the I/O screen itself. This is really useful, since you can quickly switch between recording / playback at a live session. I have one I’ve just named ‘16tk Multi’ as an example.
This is great if you only need the maximum of the 16 channels. I would also recommend using a decent SSD.

The SQ can’t record stereo files & multitrack at the same time to an external drive, so you have to choose which you want prior to recording. You can easily assign the USB to 15/16 though, (as was mentioned before) if you just want to grab a stereo mix from the mixer and not worry about a multitrack.
There is also the option of using a stereo recorder from the alt outputs at the rear. This way you could multitrack and record at the same time.

You mentioned having problems with the recorded files you had? If you haven’t already, you may well want to check the firmware on your mixer and make sure it’s all up to date. If you were trying to multitrack to a USB stick though, that could also be causing errors. Again, I would recommend an external SSD.

Lastly, you may want to read this. It’ll explain things a lot better than I probably just did!

    Hope this helps 👍

Hi there, I thought I might be able to help with a few questions you may have regarding your post.

I’ve filmed and recorded a good few live ‘one take’ studio recordings using my SQ5. I just use the 16 tracks directly to an external drive, it’s really so simple.

When I want to mix and not use Pro Tools (in my example), it’s very quick and easy to load up the tracks from the session, connect your monitors and just get mixing! The mic pre’s on the desk just sound stellar, so you’re already off to a great start. As for the fx, they all sound so good I’ve rarely felt the need to even export the files from the drive and mix in Pro Tools. The only thing I then do is then send out a mix to the DAW for a master. It’s this very old school way of mixing that I like so much, or you can of course just simply export the tracks and work in the DAW, overdub, and all the usual interface usefulness if needed!

Can’t say enough positive things about it really. The way in which the summing of the channels sound when mixing through this desk, is just sonically first class.

With regards to your question about the deep plugins, I noticed Keith posting this as a reply to another thread recently, so I thought I’d take the liberty of quoting his words.
    Hope this all helps!

“Yes, one of the main benefits of DEEP plugins is that they are embedded directly in the channel in place of the stock processing, so you can use multiple DEEP units on one channel, and on every single channel, without any added latency at all.

As a rather extreme example, you could have a mic (or line) patched to an input channel running the DEEP Tube Stage Pre, HPF, Gate, PEQ and a DEEP compressor. Then route this through a group with a DEEP GEQ, PEQ and another DEEP compressor. Send this group to an Aux with another DEEP GEQ, PEQ and a third DEEP compressor. Finally send to a Matrix for a final round of DEEP GEQ, PEQ and DEEP compressor then route to an output and you’ll still have less than 0.7ms of latency from analogue in to analogue out.

I can’t comment on future releases, but we’ve certainly had a lot of requests for more plugins already!”

I’ve owned quite a few systems, for exactly the same purpose as you’re looking to use the SQ-5 for. (I recently purchased the SQ-5 for this very reason)
As a ‘mobile recording setup’ I personally don’t think you’ll find a better sounding mixer to use in its class.
To my ears, the mic pre’s in the desk sound excellent. I would describe the A&H to have a very fat / clean sound, great FX and a really rock solid solution to what you’re looking for.
What with Dante & the new Deep plug-ins available, it’s a no brainier. (Well, it was for me anyway!)

Just get one, I think you’ll be very glad you did. 👍

I’ve had no issue running all 16 tracks directly to Pro Tools (to an external SSD).

With regards to your issue with Logic X, have you checked the buffer size? If it’s set too low in a 96k session, that could be why it’s freezing up perhaps? Try setting it to maybe 1024 samples and see how you get on..(Sorry if you already did!)

Yes, pulling the drive before it’s had time to finish writing the files is bad… with a capital B!

I’m now running OSX Mojave. I did have some formatting issues using the OSX disk utility, running Sierra at that time. Hopefully High Sierra fixed the mounting issues when trying to format an external drive in the MS-DOS (FAT) format.

Anyway, if you open disk utility and go to the erase tab once you’ve selected the drive to format. By default, it’ll want to format in the ‘Mac OS Extended (journaled) format, but just change the format tab to ‘MS-DOS (FAT)’.. Then, connect the drive to the mixer and reformat from there.

    Hope that helps 🙂

    The drive was a Samsung M3 1TB.
Was a bit of a pain formatting via Mac OS (so that the desk could format it itself, but once done it recorded all the tracks with zero errors.

    Hope that helps.

I used the SQ drive (via SSD) & multitrack recorded a 2 hour show the other night.
    It worked perfectly.. 👍
