I’ve been considering all the things Bob mentioned. Yes, most of it is old school.

I’d like to build in a rack mount case. Be nice to be able to take the PC to gigs. Yes, a 4U rack mount PC is heavy, but the performance of PC laptops seems lethargic, at best. Has anyone done this? Rack mount cases for a PC seem to be not so readily available, at least not at the quality vs. price point of standard towers.

Bob, you are speaking to the sound of the cooling fans? Very good point!

Thanks for clarifying. I though that might be the case, so mobo processing of analog output of no real benefit…. I’m hoping to build a box with fast bus speeds? Pro Tools seems to crawl. I’m not sure what really matters for what we do. Numnber of cores? Core speed? I/O bus speed? Where is the benefit in hardware realized?

To clarify what I’m up to: I’m not building a “gaming” PC. So all my young techie friends are no help. I’m building an audio processing PC. Any comments / suggestions very welcome.

    Thanks all for your replies/questions.

I will pay attention to where I’m hearing the snap/click, but I believe it only happens in the mix being delayed by rotation of the encoder.

No other use of this encoder (the main below of the primary display) has any unwanted result.

I like the hypothesis that the click results from the jump in time. Folks using Protools advocate using a fade at the beginning & end when you clip a track to avoid clicks. This could be analogous to clipping a track, only without a fade?

I’ll be sure to NOT adjust the delay when live.

I also thought it too expensive, so I made my own. By the TIME I finished I would have gladly given the U.S $50.

    A question,

Could you clarify “2. EQ with the PEQ on the channels.”
What source (beginning of signal chain) do you use to do this step?

    Thanks,
    John

I have the 16 and it works just fine.. Only reason to get a 32 would be if you want to store A LOT of music.

Follow up on APC UPS …. I found the same UPS that had previously caused a buzz to be quiet at a different venue. This leads me to believe there was some interaction between noise on the 115 VAC power bus and the APC unit.

As for necessity, if the power goes off for 2 seconds, which happens in southern Illinois all to frequently: it takes my QSC K series powered speakers about 20 seconds to reboot. No way could I have my Q mixer back online in that amount of time. Also, if the mixer shuts down the USB recording is lost (at least that has been my experience.) So I’ll be using the cheap APC, provided it stays quiet.

    Tim:

To clarify, the noise is audible in my QSC K12’s when the APC UPS is in line with my Qu16, with power from my American Audio power distro. Take the APC UPS out of the power chain: dead silence in the mains. I would not care if there was noise when running on battery, as at this point there are other problems to deal with.

I’ll certainly give another APC UPS a try, as if they can be used are a very economical solution. I have a couple more of them at home, so as soon as I get everything set up again I’ll check it out & report back.

Thanks to Ron for starting this thread.

A UPS is essential on any computer. In the case of our Qu16’s it is absolutely crazy to not have one, given the possible consequences of not having one as previously stated by others.

I agree with the reasons in this thread about the virtues of a UPS. My biggest concern is a very short duration event (power failure) … 500ms to a few seconds. If the power goes down as stays down throughout the house it’s an entirely different problem. The need is for capacity to get through a very short dropout or enough to save and perform a clean shutdown, so a couple of minutes? How long does the OS take to close the file being written to the USB drive?

What I can offer feedback on is using a common APC ES-350 UPS: It introduced a low level buzz into the system. I had to remove it to get back to a quiet system. I am guessing it was the charging system in the UPS. Anyone have any experience modifying the charging system of one of these cheap UPS’s to be able to turn it off during the gig? Without the buzz it would probably fulfill the minimum requirement for short duration backup.

Which brings me to the question: What are the low cost lightweight options that are quiet?

I decided to wait until after a gig last night to update to 1.4. as I had no need for any of the new features last night. Get to the gig, turn on the desk & wireless router, start the QuPad app only to be informed by my IPad Air that there is a “version mismatch”. The IPad, unbeknownst tp or requested by me, had updated itself to 1.4. Thanks Apple. You really s..k.

Thankfully 1.4 includes support for Windows, as I REALLY did not want to use a MacBook Pro as a DAW. Thanks to Allen & Heath for supporting Windoz. Now, if they would rewrite the QuPad app for Android….
