Compressor on reverb return!

I have a trick in my studio setup. I possess a technique within my digital audio workstation that I am about to share. In my studio, I typically apply reverb to vocals, and that’s normal 🙂 bur However, I enhance this effect by adding a slight compression to the reverb, which elevates the reverb tail and improves vocal clarity while maintaining an appealing effect. I am interested in implementing this method on the SQ5, specifically on the FX return, but I have noticed that there is no compressor available in the return . Could you provide any suggestions on how I might achieve this effect most effectively, allowing me to incorporate compression on the reverb?

+1 however you can route the output of the fx L+R return with fisical cable to a stereo input channel so you can use all the processing power, or you can use group or Aux.

I’m familiar with this studio trick. It helps provide a spacious, wet vocal, yet clear and unmuddied. Were you able to get this effectively working with your SQ5 in a live setting?

I do this on my SQ5.
I don’t assign the reverb or vocals to MainLR… instead:
I send all vocals to a group, which has a de-esser inserted on it.
I send the reverb out to another group, and compress that group, side chained from the de-esser group.

Hi, Peter. I, too use compression on my reverbs. The way I set up mine (for broadcast) is with actual reverb busses, just like we do in PT. Also, the SQ-7 lets you route from a “mix” to another one. So my reverb busses actually feed into my Vox, Inst, and Drum busses, respectively. I’m finding the desk to be rather yielding to whatever quirky things I might want to do.
