Having set channel (mic) gains at a gig and also set everyone’s monitor mixes just how they like it, there is often someone who then sings considerably louder than they did during the sound check. If a channel gain needs to be turned down to avoid clipping mid-gig it then reduces that same channel in all the monitor mixes and the FoH LR mix by the same amount, which means to maintain the same output levels I currently make a note of the amount (in dB) that I reduce channel gain by, then go through the monitor mixes & LR mix tediously increasing them by the same value. Often doing this in a couple of smaller steps so it isn’t too noticeable.
It should be relatively easy in software to have an auto-compensate mode (button). While such a feature is active any gain adjustment up or down automatically inversely adjusts (compensates) all mixes by the same amount, so nobody hears any difference but the gain has been correctly adjusted.
