The extra external supply is ALWAYS a pain!
This is the same issue I had with the QSC TouchMix 8&16 mixers.
So yes, don’t lose that power supply!

I have used feedback controllers on 2 mixers.
1 A QSC TouchMix: Completely automatic…(It moves the faders to feedback) You set this up and it finds and kills the offending frequencies. But you can reduce the depth of the notches based on your desired SPL and fidelity desired. When an announcer walked right in front of a speaker it did not feed back! I laughed!
    2. A Soundcraft Ui24R (2 DBX feedback killers 1 static and one real-time dynamic “Live”)I set up for a long room to work lengthwise and of course they decided to run the meeting from the side!
I put the Ui in “Live” mode and there was zero feedback or resonances/ringing! and they were very very close to the speakers!
** So given a certain set of circumstances, the Feedback killer is a great tool to have! And the notches are much narrower than your basic parametric or 3rd octave graphic eq.
I really thought A&H would have had it by now?
To note: I also use the Auto-Mix (Dugan-style Gain-sharing) feature for every conference or panel interview. It’s also a must-have too

As Joannes says, this is THE preferred method of gain-sharing automixing.
I recently updated firmware on a Yamaha board to be able to insert post-fader as suggested by the inventor.
You should have the option to insert pre or post. Post will more accurately deal with differing
    voices, their timbre and loudness.

I used to do this with a Yamaha DM2000 96 inputs (4 24ch layers) and (4 24ch control layers) via Nuendo and Madi.
    Q:
What is his interface to ProTools assuming he needs at least all 32 inputs? dsnake is proprietary. USB?
Also does he return monitoring to the Qu or from his Audio interface to Monitors and Headphones?

    Ah yes

Great for Virtual sound check! Not so good for switching between Inputs and USB while recording.

    2. Can you configure a custom layer to be the playback/mix layer (as done on a Yamaha DM-2000 which was actually 96 in and 96 virtual)

What you want is just to split the stereo link or not……period
AH should have included that. Its been on other consoles for a long time.

    Thanks NZDave…..

So if you can…. just try to get that extra large mixer from the start QU32

At the end of my research that might well be the best approach!

    Thanks guys,
I’m admittedly stretching the application of these products
but I’m also looking to see if there is a price/performance advantage in doing so.
    “” a 2412 and a QuPAC will do this. “”
I thought of that but can I stream stream 32 to the computer?
and 16 out of the computer through USB? (USB2 I believe)

I can do this with a Yamaha Rio 3224-D (Dante) and Dante Virtual Soundcard software and a standard computer Ethernet connection but the cost of entry is about $9,000.00.

I was wondering if there was anything in the A&H lineup (which I am a fan of) that would do this?

    Thanks,
    Jay

I put a QU-16 into a church with lots of different kinds of services and events.
No in-house mixer person so…An iPad sits on the Piano and the piano player can make adjustments.
It has been flawless. The price of a Dugan MY16 automixing card for a Yamaha console is over 2600 dollars street.
The new software upgrade for the Qu series is free and it includes automixing based on Dugan gain-sharing concepts.

I was surprised AH brought the d-Live to NAMM….quite an upscale product… but I got an earful from their representative. They answered all my questions and because I’ve had such a good experience with their Qu line I was very receptive to to their company line regarding the d-Live. I will be involved in building 2 movie theaters that will also have performing arts capabilities. The Digico product line seems to be the buzz for these applications right now.
But for a similar price point I could put together a 3-surface d-Live setup (FOH, Monitor, Recording/Broadcast)for a very similar price as a single-surface Digico. Hmm…

What I’d like to see on the Qu is a feedback killer and zone-follows-stereo-master audio level. ( I use different mixes for mid-house, vestibule and outside-breezeway zones. The only way to make it follow the stereo master is via patch cord from alt out to those other 2-track inputs to those other mixes. I believe the Qu24 and 32 can do this via the matrix.

Also the Qu-32 is locked to 32 in.
The d-snake is proprietary….not so in the d-Live
The Yamaha LS9 can use 64 inputs (2 layers)…this is much more flexible.
    I’ve used a Yamaha DM-2000 4-slots 4 24-channel layers (96 inputs) and 4 24-channel control layers…I recorded to Nuendo MADI-out to an RME PCI card.
But it took up too many slots for MADI….but it was way cool! Their new Yamaha TF series is disappointing…They don’t want to eat there own subsequently features are lacking. The Yamaha slots are designated at 16 inputs/outputs. They need wider slots (32×32) or more 16×16) slots

    Remember
Set the AltOut knob to a desired level and mark it and/or tape it off as
this will determine your send to the ST3 input and ultimately your delayed aux sends!
This is how I run my center of house and back of house church feeds! πŸ™‚
And they all follow the Stereo Master Fader.

I have not had a chance to try the new Qu AMM but the Yamaha MY-16 Dugan unit seems to be scanning with all gain down on the display. When 1 mic is used it has all the gain. If you physically speak into 2 mics it halves the gain in each keeping the overall gain the same. But I do not believe the gain of 8 unused channels is the same as 1 mic being spoken into.
At some point I may do this test with the 2 systems. Where the Yamaha uses the hardware plugin on an insert, and from what I’ve read, the Qu-AMM acts directly on the fader’s gain….which should be just fine. The only question is how much gain when nobody is talking?
