I have just struggled through this in the last week and got the redundant audio and control working great but then found this and wish I had it a week ago!

However, one thing I found was that I could bridge the network port on the M-Dante card to my DHCP server (router) and everything worked in redundant mode without manually setting any IP’s on the Shure devices. Maybe it is better to set the Primary IP manually in case the DHCP is down?

    Thanks,

    Hi and Thanks,

This is very helpful. Our musicians are already using ME and they like it. While I wish the ME had a digital return for the audio (good for a wireless in ear) this is part of the features of the IP that is nice, only needing one wire. However, I don’t like the ME for a fill or monitor because then the sound guys loose ability to override what someone might do. We gave our orchestra an Aviom that mixed a couple small wedges for them and they would turn the click trac up too loud such that you can hear it in the house. With the IP I could take it away on the fly and mix it back down 🙂

By POE+ I guess you simply mean higher power POE than a basic 12-24w injector as used for AP’s and such. I’ll do a little more research on that.

I was pretty sure the image I was seeing was a problem and the line was drifting over closer to the gigaAce where it didn’t belong.

I’m already trying to talk them into one. We’ve spent a lot on our upgrade but by doing all the work on our own have saved enough it’ll be hard for them to argue we can’t afford it 🙂

    Thanks,

I missed question #3. Can I simply use a POE injector that provides ~30w of power instead of a POE switch if I only plan to use one of these.

I read a bit of discussion about switches and POE but don’t recall anyone using something like this which is the first thing that came up on Amazon…

Maybe I’m still a little confused… I’m sharing in case it will help others…

I let the secondary network do whatever it wished on it’s own but can see through ‘Controller’ it’s on 172.31.x.x and I read somewhere that is Dante’s default or native setting I thought. How all the Shure devices (set to obtain IP automatically) ended in the same range I don’t know but it works.

On the primary network I never read conclusively or saw an example of this but I tried connecting M-Dante network port to my router in redundant mode and that is what got DHCP in 192.168.x.x to all devices on Primary side and allowed the Shure integration to work in Redundant mode. There is no mention of this in the literature I found and it did not work if I bridged the M-Dante to the extra network port on the surface. I thought this would be be same as plugging into my router for DHCP? Maybe I’ll try that again? Also before I had everything working I updated the M-Dante card firmware and I’m not sure if that made a difference or not. Another point is all current literature I have or found is iLive specific. Maybe it is well covered somewhere but I never found an example of redundant audio and control for dLive explained like this.

Our Dante network is all on Cat 5e , maybe 6 patch cables but it is the GigaAce Network I will upgrade to redundant shielded 6a. It will be easily identified from all the plain 5e running around the building and I will also make redundant runs to either side of our stage with the 6 for things like ME or DX or even our old Aviom or anything that comes along later. I know it’s overkill but I will sleep better.

    Thanks

I meant to add I just got in my wire to upgrade the surface to mixrack connection to 6a and Ethercon and make it redundant. It’s about 160 feet run and I put it in conduit becasue of all the electrical and other things in the path. The temp 5e wire in there will be used to feed Dante to another spot so I will also see if my Dante networks complain if the redundant one isn’t identical to the primary.

Dante network(s) and Shure integration all working perfect now. But I didn’t do what I’ve read I don’t think ?

    Shure receivers in redundant mode.
Primary Shure ports to first switch and M-Dante card primary.
Secondary Shure ports to second switch and M-Dante card secondary.
M-Dante card network port to my Router (DHCP server). If I had done this the first time around I would have been good I think.
    Primary network in 192.168.x.x range.
Secondary network on the M-Dante (as it’s own DHCP I think) 172.31.x.x range.

Works great and if I unplug either network there is no loss in audio.
In the Dante Controller software I had a latency flag but it was only one receiver and it was about 1.0 ms. I cycled the power on that receiver and it happily went to ~0.5 ms. All three running receivers green!

    Hello again.

No pops with Dante now !! I had the Dante card as master but guess I did not check the sync external check box. Learning.

I still do not get the Shure integration. So someone please help me sort this out. I have the ULXD set to SPLIT with the Primary ULXD’s into a switch and the switch to Network on the Dante card… then the Seconday ULXD’s into separate switch then Primary on Dante card. Audio is great but still no Shure control. I started with all default settings on network addressing but I think I need to have the ‘Shure Control’ network on compatible IP to the surface and mix rack? Right? I have tried putting the Dante Card and ULXD in manual network configuration and on the same network 198.162.1.xxx (different xxx each of course) to try that but the Dante card showed a network error and wouldn’t connect. I’m puzzled ?? I also plan to try the Shure Wireless Workbench on the control network ASAP.

So many more things to learn. We’ve made a few basic mistakes but I am really still excited about where we can get to if we start dialing everything in and using more of the capability. Biggest mistake today (choir was back) was no HPF on the choir condenser mics so we got a low near subsonic rumble at some point.

Our players are happy with ME and seem to be dialed in. I can also really hear the difference in the house especially on our drums. Some of that is finally having dedicated channels for everything.

Thanks for any help or advice, especially with Dante!

I just posted this request in my first post after setting up our new dLive this past week and this would be a great feature.

I should have known others have thought of it.

Barry, I did finally get to the PM and I will be giving you a call.

Everyone, researching some of the various suggestions and it’s all making some more sense with the pieces coming together. If we do our own install I will NEED to know the system really well and if we use a contractor I want to know we are NOT getting sold something we really don’t NEED.

Matthew… It sounds like you are few steps beyond where we are or will likely be in next few years. However it is good to know what it takes to go to the next level. I see you run a second DM in broadcast so you can have full control over DSP I guess but the Giga Ace network sends everything from stage so you could have used a DM0 I guess? Or do you have other reasons to need some physical I/O there.

Also, I was just on the phone with a company in Tulsa we work with but haven’t been there in a few years. If only I needed to be there I would ask to visit you. I am trying to put together a couple field trips for our team but OK is a long way from home.

Windsock… I think we really want to replace our old Aviom with ME if we settle on A&H… probably. Thanks for some clarity on how you can choose the where that comes from in the signal chain. I think it would be rare we really need a duplicate channel with unique DSP but it is possible I guess. Post EQ is probably the right spot for our players either way.

Jay… Also very helpful stuff and I had never heard that speaker output should be tied into fire system. We maybe should consider that? Seems you confirmed a couple other things for me too.

We are considering a contractor and still have time to talk to others. We are still some time out but the good news is that it’s looking like we might move the project up a little.

Also… Sorry for the meaningless stuff I started to type and didn’t erase there at the end of last post.

    Hello,

Thanks for the replies. I checked the box to get email updates and thought no one was getting back but now realize it was in spam folder. Sorry I wasn’t back sooner but really appreciate all the good advice.

Barry, I’m in Cookeville TN and one of our crew has family in Cleveland so a trip there would be perfect since he knows the way:) If I can message you or you message me to exchange phone numbers maybe we can set that up. Our worship leader, myself and the other guy would all be interested in spending some time to see what you are doing.

I’m not against the idea of a contractor. But we’ve had some previous poor experiences with their work and have had to essentially redo and learn most of what they didn’t bother to do or tell us. As such we’ve become pretty self sufficient but open to the idea. One reason I’m against some is they push a particular product, probably the one they make the most $ on. I would like to determine on our own what we think is the best for us. Now if anyone suggests a group that would help us settle on the right system we would be willing to talk to them and not against professional install and set-up.

I have been looking for suggestions on the DSP to replace our EAW processor and will handle a speaker upgrade when we get to that. I sort of thought DLive could do that but will head the advice as most sources suggest dedicated. Thanks.

We are an all volunteer crew with no pros or formal training. But like I said we’ve learned to do anything everything on our own and I think we could handle it. One thought I’ve had is that we run to DLive from our splitter to replace monitor world before we even change over the house. I’m thinking we could get all the ME up in the first step, learn to use pads for monitors, make sure we get everyone on stage happy then transition over to include FOH a few weeks later. FOH is actually easier than the stage in our environment.

I have never personally used Dante or set anything up. However, I’ve done far more complicated with industrial control networks and local/remote I/O and all that stuff for PLC’s so the Dante Networks look incredibly easy to me. I am planning to buy a new dedicated PC to begin looking at some of this and replace my ancient Dell laptop I used with the EAW processors and a few other things. Everything newer is better and more intuitive and I’m anxious to learn.

I wanted to hear others agree Dante is the way to send wireless mics in and send channels out for record or broadcast to our little studio. I was wondering if it made sense then to split our I/O and it may. From my research the only potential issue I see is the 64 limit which is why I was asking if you can make a FOH subgroup an output channel in the Dante network. It would significantly reduce the number of channels to pay attention to when recording and to be honest our guys who record are not that serious about mixing. So fewer is better there and a decent live mix for broadcast to other parts of the building with ability to record and mix later makes the most sense I think. We will probably need a new computer there or consider a control surface again. Anything that accepts Dante should be the right approach.

So I am also a little confused about the Dante signal. I assume something like wireless is a dry (gain only) source in to DLive but what are the options for channels out of DLive. Is it just post gain or post other dsp or you chose where?

Also I hesitate to ask what computer or surface people prefer for stage use. It’s like asking the Ford or Chevy Truck question, the answer might be Dodge 🙂

Thanks again everyone, you are all very helpful.

o another Dante question I asked the question

    that I also ran a

So one other piece of advice if you will
