    Having set channel (mic) gains at a gig and also set everyone’s monitor mixes just how they like it, there is often someone who then sings considerably louder than they did during the sound check. If a channel gain needs to be turned down to avoid clipping mid-gig it then reduces that same channel in all the monitor mixes and the FoH LR mix by the same amount, which means to maintain the same output levels I currently make a note of the amount (in dB) that I reduce channel gain by, then go through the monitor mixes & LR mix tediously increasing them by the same value. Often doing this in a couple of smaller steps so it isn’t too noticeable.

    It should be relatively easy in software to have an auto-compensate mode (button). While such a feature is active any gain adjustment up or down automatically inversely adjusts (compensates) all mixes by the same amount, so nobody hears any difference but the gain has been correctly adjusted.

    @John

    This feature is already implemented in A&H newly released CQ series mixers. It works well, but what it won’t do is increase volume above the level that it set the initial gain at. It will reduce volume if said mic gets louder and over time slowly increase it back to its starting point, it won’t increase aux volume though. So if the auto gain feature reduces a mic significantly enough those effects will be noticed in the monitors.

    I have the latest CQ and disabled this feature on all vox channels.

    Uh, nope. Decreasing the gain on the channel of said singer to where it was will be of no consequence to the wedges he or she is in. It will restore the balance you started with 🤷🏻‍♂️
