Hello, I just posted a feature suggestion to create a Mid-Side decoder FX plugin for the CQ. However, in the absence of such, I think it may be possible to do this the old-fashioned way:
-Plug the “mid” microphone into one mixer input and pan center.
– use a balanced “Y” cable to split the “side” microphone signal into two other inputs of the CQ (flipping the phase of the 2nd channel, then panning the two hard left and right). These could be linked as a stereo pair for ease of operation.
Then, the “side” pair of channels can then be balanced against the “mid” channel to control the stereo width.
This, of course eats up an extra channel on the board, but it would work. My question for the technical experts at A&H is, if I’m using phantom-powered condenser mics, can I power one side of the passively “split” microphone without doing damage to the console or the mic? If it can be done safely, should I lift the ground of the second side of the split? I don’t think making such a split would be a problem but would like to get a little advice before I try it… I don’t want to fry any inputs on my new CQ console. Thanks!
