    Thanks for the suggestion [XAP]Bob!

It would be awesome if I could do everything without switching layers, especially as I’ve routed other tracks like vocals to outboard compressors and stuff.

Unfortunately, my experience with mixer routing is limited to ten years of working ‘in the box’ and some small consoles so I’m not quite sure how your idea would work 🙂 Would you mind giving me a little bit more info, so I know more or less how I might set that up?

    Cheers, John

    Hey dhak,

What I was trying to explain – not very successfully – is that VSTs in my DAW output signals in stereo, but I can only assign the VST output to a single (mono) channel over USB and haven’t found a way of splitting the output into a left and right channel. Hope that is somewhat clearer 🙂

    Hey dhak,

Well, I’m using two of the mix outs to send aux signals to external spring reverbs and tape delays, which are routed back in to two stereo tracks.

What I’ve also done, is subtract all my drums from the main output, routed them all to a nice analogue compressor, and feed that back into the third stereo track. So instead of using the ‘normal’ faders for level adjustments of individual drums, I use the sends to the mix out. Works perfectly.

I’ve done the same for lead vocals: remove from main out, send to external analogue eq and compressor, and route back in on a mono channel, using the ‘send’ to the mix output as the level control. Obviously, the louder the output, the harder the compressor is pushed!

This setup works perfectly. The compressors, reverbs and delays in the desk are excellent, but for some things, I prefer analogue!

After only one week, I love this desk!

The ONLY thing that sucks is that I can’t work out a way to route stereo VSTs onto linked mono tracks over USB 🙂

    Cheers dhak!

Got it – the routing was so simple it would never have occurred to me to do it this way 🙂 I can now crush all my drums to death with analogue compression – AWESOME! 🙂

Still amazed at how good this console sounds…

I’ve hooked up a ton of analogue outboard, by the way: spring reverbs, tape delay, tube compressors… Perfectly complements the digital desk!

Heheheh 🙂 True: finding something out by trying and succeeding is the best way to remember it!

Looking at page 20 now – I’m guessing it’s it in the bit about Assign mix routing, using the del/assign keys? (I’m not in the studio now, so must try this tomorrow…) Thanks for pointing it out!

    Hi dhak,

Thanks for replying! Yeah, an outboard analogue compressor on the drum group or vox is awesome 🙂 That TL audio is a nice bit of gear 🙂

Your reply is in the right direction I think – my main problem is that I can’t work out how to switch off channels on the main L-R! Probably something really simple, just haven’t found it in the manual 😉

Thanks again for all the tips!

Received the QU 32 last week and I’m most impressed. Apart from the fact that the EQ and summing sound very, very pleasant and un-digital, it’s a very user-friendly piece of equipment. Considering the audio quality and feature set (things like a genuinely good reverb and ten mix outs, for example) it’s quite a bargain. Also, I’m finding it a LOT more pleasant to mix DAW projects on a ‘real’ board instead of ‘in the box’…

Only ONE last thing I can’t work out – so suggestions most welcome: I want to send all drums to an outboard (Tegeler Audio) compressor and route the compressor output back through a stereo in – but I ONLY want to hear the compressed signal, i.e. not the ‘dry’, uncompressed version. Any ideas???

Thanks once again Andreas… Looking at the block diagram, I see what you mean!

I think routing to the mix outputs would work perfectly… As I was attempting to explain, I’d like to copy certain channels – which should also remain present on the total L-R output – to separate outs which can be sent to external processors for parallel processing and routed back via the three ‘layer 2’ stereo ins.

I’m ordering the QU 32, by the way, because of the high channel count and because it looks wonderful 🙂

    Dear[XAP}Bob

    Thank you for your help!

Great – that’s what I was hoping for… The option to run channels through the matrices as well as the main mix outputs at the same time. Awesome 🙂

    Cheers, John

I THINK this can be done with the Matrix outs – not sure whether signals routed to the Matrix outputs disappear from the main L-R / AES out, though…

Thanks again chaps, this is all very helpful!

If things don’t work as I had in mind, I’ll just hook the monitors up to the A&H directly, and only use the Metric Halo for recording… That ought to be fairly foolproof 🙂

    Thanks dhak and Andreas!

    Very helpful info, much appreciated.

Really, what I was wondering is whether I can route tracks from the DAW into the desk and hear the analogue inputs at the same time. So now I understand that it is possible to select the source – DAW or physical input – per individual channel. That’s perfect!

The mic pres and the A/D converters on the Metric Halo are significantly better than anything else I’ve heard so far which is why I prefer to record stuff like vocals and guitars through it – but possibly the Allen & Heath pres and converters will surprise me positively!

    Thanks again 🙂
