Thanks cornelius78, Andreas, & DoctorG for your responses.

I’m glad to learn that the preamps are not bypassed when using the Line-in jacks. And by the way, I should have looked at the diagram. I’m currently recovering from Quadruple Bypass surgery, so my brain isn’t all there right now. 🙂

    DoctorG:
I have a degree in Electrical Engineering, so I understand the differences between discrete circuitry components and how vintage and various components can effect outputs. And while I agree I would not be able to hear the difference of a direct A/B of the preamps, you have to take the unit into consideration (compressor, EQ). Not just the preamps. That’s where the coloration of a given box comes in.

I have two main reasons why I want a high end Channel Strip like the Manley Core: 1) I am looking for a different “colored” sound than what I get going through the QU-24 preamps. It givee me more options to match individual voices to the right equipment. And a sound that is easier to get to sit in the mix properly and quickly. 2) Having industry standard names in my arsenal like Neumann, Manley, Neve, etc. is attractive to clients. How much these industry standard products make to the actual sound is totally subjective. I’m sure there are numerous plugins that will get the sound very close, but many clients don’t have an understanding how good some plugins can be. They just want to see the “name” of the hardware.

    Andreas,

I did see that reference in “Understanding Qu-Drive and USB Devices:”, but it was unclear to me. I do have a better understanding now that I looked at your math.

The only remaining question I have is: I’m not sure what influence the maximum file size on FAT32 being 4GB has, if any?

    Thanks for your response.

    Thanks [XAP]Bob!!

    NZdave,
I don’t think there was a USB cable provided in the box for my QU-24.

    Thanks for that info NZdave.

I see that you are using Reaper. I have two questions for you about Reaper if you don’t mind:

My scenario: I have the new QU-24, but I am currently running Presonus Studio One Pro3 as my DAW on my Desktop PC. I knew I couldn’t use the PC and had to change to a Mac before I purchased the QU-24. I am intending to buy an iMac 27″ in the near future. What I didn’t realize was that Presonus Studio One Pro3 wouldn’t work with the QU-24, because it does not use the HUI or Mackie protocol. It has it’s own proprietary protocol. I’m bummed about that because I really like Studio One. So, now I have to purchase a different DAW. I saw that A&H lists Reaper as one of the compatible DAW’s. My main question is around automation. Can the QU-24 perform mix-down volume automation with Reaper, where I can go back and make additional changes after the initial mix-down and then do it again as many time as I need to? I hope I explained that question correctly. And in general how do you like Reaper?

    Thanks again.
    Cheers,

I purchased the MixTagz and they work great. I bought 2 sets of the blank tags, so I can mark them with exactly what I want. I’m also using them on the stage boxes of my two snakes and on my Presonus HP60 Headphone Amp. They work great for those too!

I will post some pics when I get a chance.

    Thanks NZdave!!
I’m very impressed so far. I’m a long time MixWizard WZ3 16.2 user, so I’m a fan of Allen & Heath mixers.
    Cheers.

    [XAP]Bob,

I just got my new QU-24 a couple of weeks ago. It’s my first digital mixer, so I’m a newbie.

I am also interested in using my QU-24 to A/B studio monitors rather than buy a monitor control box. I read your post and I’m a little unclear as to what you meant. I was thinking about using the Matrix Outputs to send the LR signal to my second set of studio monitors while using the RL Mains to feed my other studio monitors. Are you saying it would be too difficult to get those output signals matched to get a representative equal sound for each set of monitors?

Any feedback from you or anyone else would be appreciated.

Thanks for those templates dpdan. Will go that route when I get the time. It’s a slicker looking solution.
    Much appreciated!!
