As per my previous post (2020/11/06 at 2:16 pm#96159 ), you’ll see I have one of these SanDisk drives
working successfully with multi-track. Whilst this is only the 500 GB version, others have also had the 250 GB working so I think it reasonable to assume that the 1TB would also work although this is not guaranteed. Note also that this applies to the QU and not the SQ. I’d suggest a no risk strategy would be to get one from your favourite retailer, try it out and return if it doesn’t work.

@xyz Thanks for this. As I said in my previous post my new SanDisk SSD ‘desktop’ drive works fine. The original discussion centred around USB ‘thumbnail drives’/’sticks’ which despite, being listed as ‘compatible’ in the A&H compatibility spreadsheet, are not at least not for multitrack recording.

Thanks for all the input on this.

    Update:
Ok, the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD (as recommended by Mike C) finally arrived – you’d think there was a pandemic on or something… 😉

Anyway, I’m delighted to report that it works fine, successfully recording an 8 hour multitrack without a single error. It’s small, rugged and doesn’t require its own power supply. I went for the 500GB version simply because it was only a few quid more than the 250GB. Hopefully it’ll also prove to be reliable as time goes by. The supplied usb lead works but is a bit crappy so I ordered up a nicer one.

    This is the drive: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B078SWJ3CF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    Cheers,

    @ volounteer

Yes all drives were reformatted. I specifically purchased a 64GB Kingston DT SE9 because it is USB 2.0 only. Fine for stereo only…

Thanks to Volounteer for your response. OK so I’ve been experimenting with various drives and here in a nutshell are my findings/conclusions:

    1. Most USB thumb drives are OK for recording stereo but useless for multitrack. The only one that records with zero errors is a 1GB Kingston Data Traveller II. Obviously, this low capacity (6 minutes) makes it completely impractical for recording say a gig or rehearsal session. Even much newer, higher capacity USB 3.1 drives, such as the 64GB Kingston Jetflash 710 and 128GB Kingston Data Traveller IV failed to record error free and some, like the 64GB SanDisk Extreme Go, even failed to be recognised by the Qu-SB.

    2. However, multitrack recording success has been achieved with an old 500 GB USB2.0 LaCie Desktop Hard Disk (https://www.amazon.co.uk/LaCie-Desktop-Hard-500GB-USB2-0/dp/B000WH7P90). This reports an 8 hour capacity and I obtained a continuous 5 hour multitrack recording with zero errors. And yes, I did listen back to all 5 hours.

So in conclusion, thumb drives are a waste of time for multitrack. The difference with desktop devices must be that their internal cache memory facilitates management of the high data throughput. They’re bulky and often require their own mains supply. If anyone can recommend a modern, compact unit that preferably doesn’t require a separate power supply then I’m all ears…

Hello, can someone please just give me the make and model of a usb drive that records multi-track reliably. I’ve tried several on the list without success including SanDisk and Transcend, and I suspect Amazon are getting tired of my endless returns! Thank you.

As andyoz mentioned previously, I use this shallow 4U case and it fits perfectly

I’ve also rear mounted a 2U perforated panel upon which is mounted a 4-way power block and TP-Link 802 router (see pic). A quick note on the router, the way it’s mounted works fine if you’re in reasonably close range (20 feet) but would recommend an external device when in a larger or WiFi-noisy environment. Mounting it on the outside of the 2U panel would probably improve things and this is an option since the rear panel will still accommodate it when not in use. Speaking of the rear panel, this also incorporates a zipped mesh compartment ideal for lead or footswitch storage.

    Hope that helps.

Our singer uses a Boss FS-6

with our QU-SB for mic muting and reverb on/off. The two switches can be independently set for either latching or momentary operation as can LED polarity. The switches are silent in operation (I’m guessing solid-state?) and the whole thing’s built like a tank. Retails for around 45GBP and to my mind, a lot less hassle than building your own. Hope that helps…
