Useful improvements to the user interface please:

    The ability to

Ability to label the soft keys to reflect what they have been programmed for e.g. ‘MUTE FIDDLE’, and assign colours.
Ability to type in longer text in labels generally – 6 characters is not enough for channel names.
Ability to arrange channels differently to the physical layout (e.g. as per Behringer X-Air ‘route map’ feature). For mixing convenience you might want input 1 (XLR) next to input 16 (Hi-Z jack). Or a combination of jack inputs (9-16) and XLR inputs (1-8) together on one window, rather than have to keep swapping between input windows. Also it is useful to be able to route one channel through two different sets of processing – e.g. using one mic for different instruments at different times, and switch between them on the mixer.
Ability to use brighter colours on the input faders so that they are easier to find during a performance. This could be done the X-Air way by just a colour block as part of the label.
Ability to assign colours to the outputs – and show them on the ‘Sends To’ selection to make it easier to select the right output for the faders.

All in all consider e.g. ‘bit more fiddle in my monitor’ = select the right set of input faders, then select the correct bus for Sends To, then find the right fader then adjust. Labels, colours and ability to organise the layout would make this a lot easier.

CQ-18T User here, and I would like to wholeheartedly add that it would be awesome to

have more than 6 characters for channel names.

This seems like a straightforward fix.

With custom layout it could be useful to add a prefix/tag with the ch number to the labels (ie, 1.Tom or Tom_1 or Tom#1…).
