HX Stomp has TRS outs where you can choose between line or instrument level. Its impedance is around 600 Ohms. I have a pair of TRS-XLR cables. Is it ok to connect that way: TRS to HX out and XLR to CQ’s mic input? Or do I need an TRS-TRS cable?

As long as the TRS output from the Stomp is a “balanced” output/signal, you can use a TRS to XLR cable. If the output is unbalanced (for example a stereo output over three wires), then you will need a direct box to convert the unbalanced signal to a balanced signal to send to the console.

EDIT – a quick internet search leads me to believe the output is balanced, so those TRS to XLR cables should work just fine. Choosing line or mic level won’t make a big difference – just the amount of preamp gain you need to apply (or not apply). Line level will require much less (if any) preamp gain vs the mic level input.

Thanks. That’s good news. What about impedance? I’ve heard you need 10 times higher impedance on input. But CQ has 1500 Ohm vs HX’s 600.

Impedance is more of an issue connecting unbalanced to balanced devices which is why the direct boxes are required. I’ve never personally come across a situation where impedance is a problem when connecting pro audio gear with balanced outputs together. It is generally designed to work this way. So while I won’t say it can’t ever be a problem, I really don’t think it is going be an issue in this case.

Regardless, you aren’t going to harm the equipment by hooking it up. If you can’t get the volume you need, then a direct box might be required. But again I think that is a very slim possibility in this case.

it’s better to use balanced trs cables (trs to trs)
the issue is if you by mistake enable the phantom power in the mixer
the hx stomp should be ok but better be safe than sorry a lot of line level equipment is not phantom safe
