The learning continues. This week it’s about Recording.

Currently, we have an M-Audio Profire Lightbridge 34 in/36 out Firewire Lightpipe Interface.

We hook up a ProTools Macbook Pro and get snits/snats after 16 channels. We access this through the MiniMultiOut card in slot B utilizing 3X8 lightpipe connectors.

So…how do YOU record into ProTools? Mac Mini? MBPro? What interfaces do you use? What cards? all the deets in (as of yet) elementary terms appreciated.

    Thanks guys!!

We have had great experiences using M-DANTE in to both mac mini and mac book pro using logic. Have done 64 channels for hours and hours… Tried with Reaper, but were experiencing recording issues in reaper that could not be explained so decided to go back to logic.

So the M-DANTE allows for direct patching into a laptop? No additional interfaces? (I understand there is an interface already in the IDR?)

    Peace! Always!

Hi again Ann, the Dante card is an add-on to the IDR32, the computer side of things needs only the DVS (Dante virtual soundcard) software, one license usually comes with the dante card add-on on the idr….check it here:https://www.audinate.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=235, and this A&H document https://www.allen-heath.com/UK/Products/Pages/ProductDetails.aspx?CatId=iLiveSeries&ProductId=Dante&SubCatId=AudioNetworkingOptionsno other hardware needed, although you need a recording software of some sort….Reaper, Logic seem the 2 that most people use…

If all your clocking is set up right, you may have a problem with your MMO card.
Word on the street is that there was a batch of MMO cards that had problems with light pipe outputs.
Get the serial number and contact A&H.

I also use the Dante card to record into a Mac Mini. I’ve had no problems with reaper however. I then import the tracks into pro tools to mix edit. Works really well. I keep telling myself I’m gonna mix/edit in reaper but just haven’t gotten the hang of its workflow. [8D]

I spent a year pulling my hair out over Dante into a PC laptop, went to a Mac Mini (Server version) a couple months ago & couldn’t be happier – it’s rock solid even with big track counts & very long recording times. I’m using Presonus’ Studio One & it’s fantastic – tracks beautifully & the editing etc is very intuitive. I’ve mixed a few thigs back into the iLive via Dante & again it’s all rock solid.

Does Anyone use MMO for recording?? Dante’s not in our budget right now.

Want to connect and find out your experiences.

Meantime, will research our Serial# and follow up with the possible bad batches. Thanks for that, @gilparente

I’m with Adam- same story here, after nightmare with several PC notebooks and continuous DVS issues switched to MBPro and Logic. No problems ever since.

We use the lightpipe on the MMO to go to my Alesis HD24. Works a treat, and only 3 cables to connect. I’ve also used it for analog playback into the system, which works fine too. You’re only limited to 24 tracks, but we can manage with that limitation for now. Longest record so far is about 24 tracks for 4 hours. I’m very keen to explore Dante in the future.

    Cheers,

Hey, try the m-waves card. It allows you to record 64 channels without the need for any additional license for each computer you plug in. Also you do not need to create a patch, setup clock etc.
When you only have a simple setup the patch is automatically done 1 to 1.
Not to mention you can always get a server to run some nice plugins;)

@Elphie, the Alesis HD24 has come up in the past. But the boss is keen on trying to make the Lightbridge work.

@fab, I’ll look into the m-waves card. I’m not sure why we have the MMO aside from recording. Along with the 3 ADAT outs to the LIghtbridge, we also have 2 cables coming out of the iDR expander on the MMO into an 8-channel iDR expander unit?? and on the surface, outputs, these channels are used for my monitor auxes (if I remember correctly)

(I’d insert a pic here, but the insert image button doesn’t go to an upload…and I don’t do code)

Ann if you have M-audio lightbridge is it possible you also have a version of Protools that is M-powered? if so this is why you only have 16-18 channels it just doesn’t support anything above that and you’re already hitting the max capacity….have you tried Reaper for tracking? its free to try and if it works for your needs you only pay $60.

Also note that for best tracking into a mackbook pro I would use a faster external 7200 drive for maximum track count rather than the standard on board 5400 rpm drive , of course YMMV….

    hi!

i use the m-waves card for recording/playback (64 channels bidirectional).
it costs the same like dante but if you want you can use it for live-processing with waves-plugins, too ;)
… and the driver is very well programmed by waves (coreaudio + asio)

    kind regards,
    andie

Along these lines..has anyone had success with using an MBox Pro with iLive to capture recording?
