    Hello everyone.

Can ANYONE confirm that they have control of the soundgrid server working working, tunneled through their ACE connection? A&H claims this to be possible. I seem to be having trouble right now with even getting the soundgrid server to work properly on its own Cat5e, and if I try to tunnel it, the surface goes berserk…

    hi!

    yes it works!
just take care of the very well documented movies and pics on the ilive website and on http://www.waveslive.com.

i do this with 2 servers (one for redundancy). the wavescard is bridged to one of the network ports on the idr, one port of the card goes straight to my gigabitswitch and the 2 servers are plugged in there.
on foh my macbook pro with multirack soundgrid is connected to one of the network on my surface and runs all plugins.

in my stagerack there is a macmini that is configured to do recordings – and this mini is remote-controlled through the ace-cable with my macbook pro on foh, too ;)

    kind regards,
    andie

Ok. Can I ask what Cat cable you are using? Exact model and length :) I need a 80 meter minimum for festivals.

I have had quite a few problems with a production I’m renting out at the moment, and I have been wondering if it could be the Pinanson dual cat5e + 220v + AES cable that is causing trouble. The FOH guy keeps struggling with sync errors (Clicks and pops), and not beeing able to find the server on from multirack, requiring multiple restarts of the whole system.

I don’t remember having such problems myself, but I am wondering if this Dual cable is the problem… Since waves is on a completely seperate cable, you would think it should have absolutely NO problems.

Also, what switch are you using? Mine is a cheap home office TP link Gigabit. And do you have a router attached?

    … i am using a belden 1305a catsnake cat5e cable.
it is designed for mobile live-use and is unshielded.
i carry this on a schill drum and the length is 90m with ethercons.

my swith is a dlink dgs-1005 – this is a model, which is recommended by waves.
there are some other models that are recommended – but the main thing is, that the switch must support jumboframes.
no problems at all – but: if do not use a second sg server (redundancy) you don’t need a switch. this is because the wavescard has a 3port gigbit switch on board ;)

Just to be shure: you do not have soundgrid driver installed on the computer you are using for contol?

I use remote desktop via wlan with an netgear n600 router and not tunnel it via ace. Did not work very well for me either.

This way it works without problems.

Ok. My switch does support jumbo frames, so that shouldn’t be the problem. I think i will have to do some testing with various cables and combinations, but I must say I’m kind of surprised that it’s not just working effortlessly.

… please refer to the pdf, which shows the necessary cat cable to run soundgrid systems properly (on waveslive.com)
for best performance you must use cat6 cable stp (shielded)

    Hey Tor,
are you trying to send audio to the controller computer at foh?
Basically the way the system, should be configured is you tunnel control into the ACE system, not audio. This is due to bandwidth limitations in the tunneling. We strongly discourage using long cables for soundgrid.
Follow this link to find out our recommendations on cables type and lenght for SoundGrid.

If you want to record at the same time, i suggest you have a computer onstage near the server and use the foh computer for controlling the processing.

Let us know how you get on!

No no, it is only control from FOH. No recording. What du you mean you you strongly discourage using long cables for Soundgrid? Hopefully you only mean for recording or connection to the waves stagerack from server….? For a festival I will need at least 80 meters of cat5e/cat6 from FOH to the Stagerack. The cable from my Waves Card to the switch and from there to the server is only 50cm or so.

I have a 50 meter dual cat5e cable, and even though the FOH guy renting ONLY uses multirack, no audio driver enabled or configured, he gets sync errors, click and pops from the soundgrid server. I have not really experienced this myself, but since the system is on tour with the production, I can’t get it home for testing.

I/he knows how the system is supposed to be configured, it just doesn’t work for him for some reason. Surface connected with separate Cat5e, Laptop connected with separate Cat5e, multirack running, no soundgrid driver/audio, lots of problems. It even takes him multiple restarts to even find the server sometimes. And this is not even through the R72 – I am stunned that anyone can ever get it to work through the surface with all these problems he’s having.

I do have a joint (neutrik) and a switch between the card and server, so I have asked him to run the cat5e cable directly from the card to the server instead, and report back.

The weirdest thing is, that he restarts the whole setup, and after a few times and good luck, the sync problems dissappear, and it will work flawlessly for the entire evening…!!

    Hello Tor,

I am not sure this is a cabling issue, It sounds more like configuration.

How am I able to reach you for assistance?
I would like to look at the MultiRack session itself.
