    hi!

i’m planning to extend my ilive system with 2x gigabit switches.
one on stage with the idr48 an the other on foh with my 112 modular.
    the following items are important:
    -) i want ACE tunnelled thru a VLAN (100mbit)
-) i want connect dante also via VLAN to this switch (do i have to tunnel dante?)
the recording/playback macbook is at foh and receives data

is this possible with just ONE cat5e/cat6 cable between these 2 gigabit-switches?

further extension can be a fibre-optic system, where we can transmit dmx, dvi, etc.

i’m looking forward to your answers.

    greetz,
    andee

    Hi Andee

Yes this has been done before by customers.
ACE will need to be put in its own VLAN seperate from the rest of the network.
Dante should be able to work with the rest of the network traffic so not needed to be in its own VLAN.
This should all be possible over 1 gigabit cable or fiber connection between the 2 switches.

some Level1 switches have been recommended before. Hopefully IanB can comment on this.

Hi Sam, Andreas the Level 1 GSW 0841 is the one we use though if budget was not an issue the HP Pro-Curve range is very good. The GSW 0841 only has one SFP port but that is fine for point to point. It is then very easy to add an off the shelf Neutrik Tactical fibre. The back bone is 16Gb so plenty of bandwidth internally.
    Hope this helps

Why take the risk of loosing a recording by sending all audio data over 40+ meters of cable?

Better have the recording computer near the mixrack and use a cheapo computer or an ipad with a remote desktop application to start and stop recording.

By the way, de RDP app would work perfectly on the LAN tunneled over ACE, so no investment in extra routers needed (except the one you might already have for wireless).

    hi wouter!

sure – for recording i’ll do it like you mentioned.
but i try to take dante for my waves plugs – and these are at foh on my macbook.

i recommend you to put recording computer near iDR, i have made the setup based on 2 x Mac mini’s , CISCO gig switch & wifi AP, Mini is for the recording another for Waves multirack & payback, everything controlled perfectly by shared screen ,all cables less than 1m stowed in rack, later will send you a photo.

    hi robert!

thank you! i’m with you – that make sense.
i have read your thread for waves multrack + dante … fine. and now i plan to do that, too.
the only issue is the minimum of 4ms latency for the ethernet-dvs.
is this in both directions (in plus out) or just e.g. in ?

    Hi Andreas!
It’s not only 4ms for DVS also you have to add Multirack latency & plugin latency, all plugins have different latency (look on waves site). So to be true i have over all latency about 12ms for L3 limiter, but it do not bother me at all because i use it on groups. Recently i’ve got rid of my WAVES MAX BCL (it has 220samples latency from analog to analog) so now i am using Multirack instead. Anyway if you are big fan of Waves try to make your setup with M-WAVES card it has much less latency. Personally i do’nt want to be so plugin dependent engineer. DANTE opens much more options in interfacing with other equipment e.x. i have purchased 2x YAMAHA MY-DANTE cards and now i am splitting digitally from very popular M7CL… and there is LM26 on my plans. So look for your best solution:)
    Good luck Andreas!
