Following Bob’s suggestion, I’d say it would be better to AFL the mix he would like to use. Of course that complicates things when using the mixer as a FoH mixer, but the headphone jack (like any other mixer) is tied to the PAFL bus.

For what it’s worth you could use a beltpack headphone amplifier, which would alleviate the rack space requirement.
